THE Nigerian migrants remitted about $7billion in in 2009, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), Mr Robert Orya, has disclosed.

Orya, while declaring open the 2010 Enterprise Exhibition, sponsored by the Bank of Industry (BOI) and others, in Abuja, on Monday, said the bank and its development partners would continue to explore the potentials of diaspora resources and talents for the realisation of Nigeria's development aspirations.

Disclosing that Africa accounted for up to $14 billion of the globally recorded remittances, Orya said Nigeria, which is the most populated African country and the one with the highest number of migrants, recorded remittances from about 20 million indigenes in diaspora to the tune of over $7 billion.

The NEXIM bank boss said the level of remittances had assumed a downward trend due to the global economic recession.

In a speech, read by the chief spokesman of BOI, Mr Waheed Olagunju, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank, Ms Evelyn Oputu, said the event was a structured platform that had been designed to facilitate the inflow of diaspora investments.
