Martha scored Brazil’s lone goal against a highly-disciplined Italian team to become the South American nation’s leading goal scorer at the World Cup—male and female.

Martha scored from a spot-kick in the 74th minute on Tuesday afternoon.

With her total World Cup goals now at 17, Martha looks forward to setting the bars even higher as Brazil prepare for the Round of 16.

Martha, 33, is in her fifth World Cup campaign and has never failed to score in any. This implies that she has more opportunities to extend her record in the knockout stages.

The only footballer to have achieved comparable feats to Martha’s are: Miroslav Klose of Germany who scored 16 career World Cup goals; Ronaldo (15), Birgit Prinz, Abby Wambach and Gerd Muller (14 each).

Martha (full name Marta Vieira da Silva) currently plays for Orlando Pride. She has so far scored 17 goals in 47 appearances for the Orlando-based football club in Florida, USA. One of her memorable achievements is the 2013 recognition from FIFA which made her one of the six Ambassadors present at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, alongside Amarildo, Bebeto, Carlos Alberto Torres, Ronaldo and Mario Zagallo.

Thanks for your personal opinion. But "gender equality" implies rating men and women as equal, first, as humans created by one God, and second, because doing so adds confidence and brings the best in them. Degrading women doesn't make men better. With regards to football, didn't you see the quality display from Nigeria's Super Falcons against France? In my opinion, they made us prouder than we've ever been since the class of USA 94 and Atalanta '96. You'll quite agree with me that women's football is really getting better @Homers123 but maybe not measuring up to men's standard at this time.
