An Italian court in Bologna has recognised Ferrari 250 GTO not only as a classic car , but as a work of art that is entirely original and must not be imitated or reproduced. The tribunal said the production, commercialisation and promotion of the model belonged solely to Italian automaker, Ferrari.

Ferrari spokesperson said:

“It’s the first time in Italy that a car has been recognised as a work of art,”

“It’s not just its beauty that makes it special – it also has a long racing history.”

The landmark ruling came after Ferrari complained that a company in the northern city of Modena was planning to produce 250 GTO replicas.

The 250 GTO became one of Ferrari’s most successful racing cars, renowned for its aerodynamics, great handling and powerful V12 engine.

Ferrari said:

“It’s not just its beauty that makes it special—it also has a long racing history,”

All 36 of the highly prized sports cars, made between 1962 and 1964, survived till date and each now has its own unique history.

The Ferrari 250 GTO classic car is also the most expensive car ever sold at auction. Last year, RM Sotheby sold a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO for $48.4m (₦17.4 billion ) at an auction in Monterey, California.

Renowned US Ferrari collector and WeatherTech CEO, David MacNeil, also bought a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO for a World record sale $70m (₦25.2 billion)  at a private auction in June last year.
