A group of researchers at Facebook built a number of extremely realistic virtual homes and offices to enable AI algorithms learn and understand how the real world works.

The real deal: The experienced team at Facebook Reality Labs built 18 “sample spaces” through a program called Replica. The idea behind the project is for AI agents to learn and understand real-world objects through exploration and practice. In theory, this could effectively make robots and chatbots smarter, and in many ways make it possible to manipulate VR in powerful ways. But the virtual spaces ought to be extremely lifelike for this to be applicable to the real world.
