Oranges are juicy citrus fruits that is high in vitamin C. Some researchers have argued that orange peels contains vital nutrients, and should also be eaten, not thrown away peeling the orange fruit. Orange peels contain several nutrients such as vitamin C, fiber, and plant compounds like polyphenols.

Several studies have shown that 1 tablespoon (6 grams) of orange peel provides 14% of the Daily Value (DV) of vitamin C. This value is almost 3 times more than the inner fruit.

Studies show that foods that are rich in vitamin C and fiber benefit heart and digestive health and may protect against certain types of cancer. Orange peel also contains good amounts of folate, provitamin A, calcium, vitamin B6, riboflavin, thiamine,).

Orange peel is also rich in plant compounds called polyphenols, which may help prevent and manage many chronic conditions. Reports from a preliminary study proved that the total polyphenol content and activity in orange peels was considerably higher than in the actual orange fruit.

The peels of orange are a good source of the polyphenols hesperidin and polymethoxyflavones (PMFs), both of which are being studied for their potential anticancer effects.

Potential Disadvantages

Consuming orange peels also has certain detriments, in spite of the nutritional benefits.

May cause stomach discomfort

Orange peels may be hard to digest due to their high fiber content and tough texture. This may eventually lead to stomach discomfort. Eating larger orange peel pieces all at once, could lead to stomach cramps, pains, and bloating.

May contain pesticide residue

Orange fruits mostly suffer from mold and insect attacks. So pesticides are used to protect them. Studies have found the peels of oranges contain high amounts of pesticides, while the inner fruit of oranges still contain, but very insignificant levels.

Studies have linked chronic pesticide consumption to increased risk of developing cancer risk and hormone dysfunction.

These effects are linked to constantly high levels of exposure rather than the relatively small amounts found in the peels and skins of fruits. To reduce the amount of pesticide, thoroughly wash orange fruits under hot water before eating.

Bottom Line

Orange peels contain three times more nutrient than the inner fruit. To prevent stomach upset, you should eat smaller amounts of orange peel at a time. Orange peels can be cut into thin strips and added to salads or smoothies. You can also use them to make orange marmalade.

To prevent ingesting pesticide residue, wash orange fruit properly with hot water before consuming.
