Patience Johnson - severely burnt

For allegedly pouring hot water on a housewife, eldest son of Sir Shina Peters, the Afro Juju crooner, Seyi Peters, has been remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons, Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria, on the order of a magistrate.

He was arrested by the police at the weekend and charged before the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on Monday on a one-count charge of pouring hot water on Patience Johnson and injuring her in the process.

Trouble started for the 33-year old Seyi at the weekend when he allegedly carried a pot containing hot water meant to prepare yam flour (amala) at a nearby canteen and poured it on the woman during a scuffle.

Investigations revealed that fighting broke out between the accused, and the victim around 11.30 a.m on the fateful day when the latter asked him to move away from the entrance of her restaurant and bar at 1, College Road, Off Iju Road, Agege, Lagos so that she could open the door.

But the accused who was said to be drinking beer in front of the restaurant refused. In an attempt to drag him away from the entrance, his shirt got torn and fighting ensued.

Seyi allegedly claimed that the torn shirt cost him N25,000 and the restaurant owner must pay for it. Every attempt to move him away from the spot by friends and residents proved abortive.

Police investigations revealed that in annoyance, the accused carried a large pot of boiling water from a nearby canteen and poured it on the victim.

After the act, he ran away on a commercial motorcycle.

He was, however, pursued by the victim’s daughter, Angela Johnson, who wrestled him to the ground and sought help of policemen on patrol.

He was arrested and taken to the Pen Cinema Police Station where he allegedly blamed the devil for his action.

In his statement to the police, he was said to have blamed his stepmother for casting a spell on him.

He was charged to court on a one-count charge of pouring hot water on his victim and causing her bodily harm, an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 335 of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The charge reads: “That you, Seyi Peters, on 23 October, 2010 at about 11.30 a.m at 1, College Road, Ifako, Agege, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did unlawfully wound one Patience Johnson, ‘F’ by pouring unto her body hot water and caused her grievous bodily harm and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 335 of the Criminal Code, Cap C.17, Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.”

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N250,000 and a surety who must have a house in Lagos with a verifiable address and must be a tax payer.

Following his inability to meet the conditions, the magistrate ordered that he should be remanded at the Kirkiri Maximum Security Prisons. The matter has been adjourned till 24 November, 2010.

His victim, a mother of three, is currently receiving treatment at AB10 Specialist Hospital, College Road, Ogba.

P.M.NEWS visited the hospital and she narrated how the accused attacked her.

Mrs. Johnson disclosed that on that fateful Saturday morning when she got to her shop at about 11 a.m, she met Seyi blocking the entrance to her shop with a chair and two bottles of Gulder in his hands.

“I then asked him to please allow me to open my shop. I want to pray and do other domestic chores but he was adamant. He told me that he will not leave and started hurling abuses at me.

“He called me a silly woman and said that all my daughters are love-peddlers. It was at this stage that somebody who came to buy food beside my shop now told him to leave my shop and asked him what he stands to gain by looking for trouble early that morning. It was after that that he left my shop.

“After I opened the shop, I prayed and picked the broom to sweep my surroundings. While doing this, I decided not to move closer to where he was standing in order to avoid trouble. So, after I finished sweeping, he brought back his chair to my shop and started abusing me again.

“He called me a foolish woman and that he will deal with me mercilessly in his own way. When I did not answer him, he stood up from his chair and started beating me. Since my strength could not match his, I held on to his shirt and he started dragging me about and his shirt got torn. It was at this point that he got angry the more and said he will kill me for tearing his N25,000 shirt,” she narrated.

She told P.M.NEWS further that the accused attacked her with planks inside her shop and he even threatened to pour acid on her.

“I was inside my shop trying to adjust myself when all of a sudden he came with the hot water that the woman selling amala beside my shop wanted to use to prepare amala and poured it on me, ” she added.

Seyi Peters had been disowned by Sina Peters some years ago following his alleged waywardness.

When the Afro-juju creator was contacted over the latest incident, he said he had disowned Seyi long ago and had nothing to do with him.
