I have been given a bill of about N500,000 (workmanship inclusive) to wire a duplex comprising of 6 bedrooms, 2 living rooms.

Can anyone with the necessary know-how advice me please. I kind of think that this amount is too much

Electrical Installation for a fresh buildings are usually described in the Bill of quantities as a Provisional Sum simply because the building is a proposed building i.e. not yet visible. The provisional sum are determined by making reference to project executed previously and also the quality of fittings, wires, sockets and switches been recommended determines how huge the cost will be.

Take for example the cost for electrical installation using ABB sockets and switches will be about 60-70% higher than someone using locally made sockets and switches.

So therefore before you can judge the 500,000.00 cost given to you, you will need to verify the type and quality of materials that the electrician is recommending. As for me i think that 500,000.00 is too low to get the best quality electrical wiring and fittings for a befitting duplex with high taste, but it all depends on your taste and how long you want the life span of the electrical fittings, sockets and switches to last.

i think ytechconst hit d nail on d head, and to butress on it, you should make up your mind on types of materials to use, then purchase them, and engage an electrician to fix it. i market electrical wiress and cables in coils, so if you can post the sizes you need, i can give you the best prices and introduce to you a competent HND electrician.

@poster.I will not say that is too much right now but I believe you can still buy high quality material's and save up.

de main man, therein lies d problems. these sizes of cables u mention comes in x2c and x3c and also with earth /denoted as te/ and are they flat/union/single or standard cables? ask your electrician to list it out as this : 1.5mm x 2c with te flat cable or 1.5mm x 2c single cable. also ask him to indicate the qty of yards needed, because of the diff in coil sizes. my mail is maxndianaefo@yahoo.com, reply there so we can discuss @ length. thanks.

Coleman cable is good and the quantity depend on the size of the building and the type things you are installing. But my fear is 4mm cable that he quoted 7200naira. The price of 4mm coleman is more than that. Let him confirm from recent market price.

The 1.5mm green cable is going to serve as earth cable for the 2.5mm while the 2.5mm green cable is going to serve as earth cable for 4mm. But I don't how the your electrician fix the pipes. There are some switches that are 2-way switch and they are mostly used in all the rooms. If all the rooms are 2-way switch, you may likely buy additional 1.5mm green for traveller. The length of 16mm single core cable is dtermine by the distant between your cut-out/changeover switch and the distribution board installed. For the DSTV cable, the correct cable in the market is the one with 300yard which sells for 16000naira, there are other ones of 3,500/coil, 4,500/coil. They are good but not like 16,000naira. One coil of 3,500 or 4,500 cable should be okay for that except you want to run antenae cable together with the DSTV cable.

how many AC and water heater do you have in the building?

I'm a Coleman distributor and jst in addition to what topsy hs written, i'd like to recommend that you opt for the coleman brand of RG6 cable (i.e the DSTV or antenna cable), sells for about 7500 (for a coil of 100m), alot of people dont even know that coleman now manufactures them. its of better quality than almost if not all imported variants, and provides better value
I'll also recommend that you exercise extreme caution when purchasing cables in general, always buy from a certified distributor for any brand you finally decide to go for, there are alota ways u could get swindled , magnets only serve to detect the presence of iron in the wire is question, it dsnt tell if the cable has been recoiled (quantity reduced), or falsely sized up (fraudulent labeling) , you also have to lookout for imported cables wrapped and recoiled as popular Nigerian brands.

as a professional in this field with five years of field experience and as a certified electrical engineer, my advise to you is that the cost is too low for that kind of a project only if u want to make use of substandard materials which is not the best. a grade A material for a standard duplex will cost u nothing less than 800k inclusive labor. pls be wary of this low class and local electricians. they dont take standards, regulations and specifications into cognizance.
