The House of Representatives on Wednesday called for the abolishment of ‘acceptance fees’ paid by students offered admission into various institutions in Nigeria.

A motion moved by Emeka Chinedu, PDP-Imo (Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency), Wednesday got the lawmakers debating about how to reverse this trend.

Leading the debate, Mr Chinedu said one of the factors contributing to poor access to tertiary education is the “predatory admission policies being enforced by tertiary institutions, particularly the requirement for payment of non-refundable acceptance fees as a condition precedent for admission”.

He added that “it should bother the lawmakers that his state’s Imo State University charges N70,000 as acceptance fee.”

“Other institutions like the University of Ibadan charge 35,000; University of Lagos, 20,000; Ahmadu Bello University, 30,000; Lagos State University, N20,000; University of Uyo, 25,000,” he said.

He, therefore, moved that the fee be abolished. He was unanimously backed by his colleagues.

Resolution

The House also mandated the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services “to investigate the admission policies and practices of tertiary institutions in the country as they relate to the charge of acceptance fees in order to remove all obstacles to accessing tertiary education in the country.”

Meanwhile, Idowu Olayinka, vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan, has said his institution will comply with the directive.

He said the amount accruing to the University of Ibadan, for instance, in a year is not enough to fund the university in a month. “Therefore, the school has to look for alternative means to source for funds”.

“Someone has to take up the bill,” he said. “We have to make up our mind on what we really want. You can’t even run a creche without funds. In a year, we spend at least N200 million on our clinic contactors. Add this to electricity bill and diesel, then you’re talking of over N800 million.

“What the university is getting for overhead is less than N100 million. So where do you think the remaining N700 million will come from? Unless you want to close down the whole university,” he added.

Good move.

Many potential students have lost their admission because of the so-called "acceptance fee"
Because they practice such in America doesn't mean we have to do same here.

School fee, hostel fee, departmental fee, faculty fee and so many other fees are enough problems already.

May God bless the PDPsenator that moved the motion. This is long over due, high cost of education promotes illiteracy. There are many meaningful ways the schools can build their IGR other than draining the Jamites.

They should include the post jamb fee too....

What's the point collecting money from a prospective candidate only to tell him or her passing the exam doesn't guarantee that he/she will be admitted. Is it failing the exam that will now guarantee admission ...

That's more like obtaining under false pretence.... Almost everything for this country na 419

Long overdue.

The fees make no sense at all.

Initially nobody pays for acceptance, we just signed acceptance form provided by JAMB. Like play like play, Nigerian universities monetise it.

Thanks to the house of representatives for scrapping it.

Ehen sense don dey come. Abeg remove that nonsense. After all Brazilians don't pay school fees in their fed universities. They only pay for accommodation and few things. And their cost of living is high.

They should give JAMB the sole right of admitting students and cut off mark should be 100 in universities and 70 for poly in order to stop bribery.

The truth is that Nigeria ought to fix her vocational/technical schools because, unlike we erroneously believe, high Institutions are not meant for everyone

High instutitions need funds to operate. So, if you continue to deprive it of funds, the pressure will be on the government.

High instutitions are not cheap anywhere in the world.

Long over due.. it's just a very sad way of robbing incoming students of their money nothing more. It doesn't make sense at all and the amount keeps going high so crazy. Unilorin for example started collecting acceptance fees in the year 2011, between 2011-2019 the fee as increased to 25,000 naira. Since the money will not be deducted from their school fees why this high. I wish they do something quick about it.

Lol....

But Acceptance fees are normal anywhere in the world.

The only thing is that where they are charged - they count as DEDUCTIONS from your Tuition fees.

Regardless, it has to be regulated. No institution should collect more than a stated amount to secure a person’s admission and the fees must be deductible from the proposed Tuition fees.

I don’t see this Bill surviving if it seeks to totally abolish it.

This should be passed as soon as possible before we get to pay as much as 200k just to accept an admission we have worked and written so many exams for.

Good move, indeed.
