Transcorp Hotel Abuja Bans Lodging or Serving Female Customers Not Accompanied By A Man

Foremost Human Rights Activist, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has criticized Transcorp Hilton Abuja for engaging in practices and issuing policies which according to him are discriminatory and against the law.

The erudite scholar voiced this stance while narrating an incident in which his sister, Ler Jonathan, was restricted from sitting at the bar for not being accompanied by a man.
Narrating the incident, he said:
“Yesterday evening on Human Rights Day, of all days, my sister Ler Jonathan goes into a bar on the ground floor of Hilton Abuja at the end of a long day of travel, settles in to request modest refreshing. She also has a business to transact; this is at the Lobby Bar.

So, she calls the attention of a waitress for a menu. The waitress approaches and quietly disqualifies her from service. According to this waitress, “company policy” of Hilton Abuja precludes her from serving females who are unaccompanied by a man. The waitress then goes away and returns thereafter bearing her supervisor who affirms her. At this, Ler Jonathan asks to speak to the duty manager, who confirmed that it was Hilton Abuja’s policy indeed not to serve women who are unaccompanied by men.”

He added that the unstated premise of this so-called policy is twofold. That, first, the woman, no matter how old she maybe is an infant. Secondly, Hilton Abuja sets up a policy that effectively smears every woman who shows up in the place as a sex worker. Speaking on the policy, he noted that it is backward, discriminatory, and unlawful.
“This policy of Hilton Abuja is backward, discriminatory, and unlawful. In 1992 the High Court of Zambia ruled in the case of Sara Hlupekile Longwe v. Intercontinental Hotel, when the hotel excluded Ms. Longer from service because she was female.

“Subsequently, Intercontinental Hotel reviewed its policies, practices and staff orientation to bring them in line with the law. In Nigeria, Hilton Abuja chooses to make money from being offensively antiquarian. There have to be costs,” he said.

He also noted that, meanwhile Transcorp CEO, who looks to run for government of Anambra State, has to sort this stuff before he saunters off on his political expedition. “This kind of practice under his watch can’t be exactly very pleasing to the hardworking women or Anambra when they hear it,” he added.
However, in a press release signed by the General Manager, Kevin Brett, the management stated that it frowns at discrimination.

They also stated that the alleged incident on gender-based discrimination is being investigated with a view to establishing the facts and dealing with the same, in line with their earlier zero-tolerance policy.

I quite agree that the reported incident was discriminatory but how can the hotel management protect its business premises from being overrun by sex workers who like to flood such places to hunt for game?I think there should be a more humane method comparable to what is obtainable in other international hospitality outfits.

I was sexually harassed by a grown woman at the lobby bar-‘piano bar’ if Transcorp Hilton Abuja a while ago during the course of a meeting with a business partner.

In that particular incident,the beautiful looking lady knowing fully well she was wearing no underwear under some sort of flowing gown sat in a position which was directly opposite my view and widely opened her legs in an attempt to seduce and distract me from my money making track.
I was forced to behold her private part until I had to change my seat.

I’m pretty sure there’s been a lot of reports of rich looking men being harassed by this abuja desperado sex workers or corporate whores.

Hmmmmmmmm. This is akin to stupidity.... So no privacy again You mean I cannot sleep alone in peace again This people are not serious at all....

That's the practice in the North.

In some of these hotels, high-class escorts and prostitutes seat at these tables and try to attract others who are there for business and social gatherings. It's become really embarrassing that most hotels do not let single ladies wait at their bars and restaurants anymore.

The hotel is just protecting their business. Nothing more.

It even got to the point that 4 or more of these ladies will contribute money to book a room on floors with many foreigners. Then stand by their room while cat-calling the white men when they pass.

There are so many ethics in business that if you were not told, you would not believe they were necessary.

Business is such that if you got it wrong, it will come crashing on your head ?

Do you know some house owners don't allow male tenants on their property ? Haven't you heard that ?

If you were not a landlord, you won't know why.

It's normal. Most ladies dress up, enter transcorp, order for a bottle of water, press their phone while hoping they'll catch the attention of any maga passing by. Ladies go to transcorp to hustle and the management have been battling with it for years. Transcorp is a 4½ star hotel. Lots of rich people hangout there so expect an influx of ladies looking for customer.
