They are almost done with the installation of Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) at Enugu Airport.

The Enugu Airport is scheduled to be reopen the before Easter, God Willing.

With the ILS gear in place at Enugu Airport, inbound aircraft can make safe precision landings even when the visibility is extremely poor, or in bad weather when the runway is barely visible beneath very low cloud ceilings typically encountered during tropical thunder storms.

With Enugu Airport's new ILS capability, it will even be possible now for pilots to configure for full ILS autoland sequences at Enugu airport, during which the final approach, flare, landing touchdown, and roll-out steering along the arrival runway center-line, are all handed by the autopilot, with no human hands required on any of the flight deck controls besides the flaps selector lever and then the thrust reverse levers, until when it is time to depart the runway on the designated exit point taxiway.

In short, Enugu Airport has attained a MAJOR aviation safety milestone with the installment of the ILS and DME transmitters now nearing completion. This installation represents a significant enhancement of air travel safety in Nigeria, that should be replicated nationwide.

only the final approach is handled by ILS. flare, touchdown are carried out by the pilot. it is an aviation rule to hand fly the last 500 feet of altitude regardless of VFR or IFR. also for any runway still not visible at 500 feet. a missed approach is declared and a go around is initiated.

Configured for auto-land mode on approach into an ILS equipped runway, the horizontal localizer and vertical and glide-slope alignment, the landing flare, touchdown, throttle-to-idle, wheel braking and nose-wheel steering are all FULLY automated in both the Boeing and Airbus platforms, provided that auto-brake was pre-selected on the rotary dial, and that neither pilot disengages auto-brake by tapping the toe-brakes during landing roll-out.

During a Category III full auto-land, the pilot need only actuate the thrust reverse levers after the nose wheel touches down, stow thrust reverse "buckets" while decelerating through 80 knots, before manually steering by tiller or rudder pedals, once fully slowed down at the start of the turn that departs the landing runway, heading towards the designated taxiway.

In addition to weather and visibility considerations, company policy, rather than "aviation rules", dictates how often auto-lands are performed. Some airlines require pilots to set up for a full auto-land at specified flight-hour intervals regardless of weather, so as to remain conversant with the procedure, meaning that it is routine for auto-lands to be performed even if the weather is perfect, again, because of company policy.
