Your first instinct will be to disagree, but you may have some toilet habits that are bad for your health.

Many infections have been linked to the improper use of toilet, and these avoidable diseases develop slowly in the body as you continue to engage in bad toilet habits.

Apart from your health, these habits also affect the lifespan of your toilet itself, and any damage you cause will be fixed or even replaced with money. So, your financial budget is also at risk. Here are 8 toilet habits that are harmful to you. Are you guilty of them?

Spending Too Much Time In The Toilet

You may be having so much fun reading a book that you feel the need to take it with you to the toilet, which will make you spend more time on the toilet seat.

Smartphones are even more tempting, since they contain e-books, social media, videos, etc.

What you should know is that anything you take into the toilet will get infected, and that bacteria will spread to anyone who touches the object when you finally leave the toilet.

Also spending more than 5 minutes on the toilet seat is bad for your anal veins, which could lead to different health problems.

So, always endeavour to spend as little time in the toilet as possible.

Flushing With The Toilet Lid Open

veryone knows the importance of flushing, but most people forget to close the lid before doing so.

If you are one of those people, have it in mind that the waste you flush contain a lot of germs. So, when you flush with the toilet lid open, you expose these bacteria to the air, infecting the entire bathroom space.

Recent studies show that when you flush, the dirty water particles can splash as high as 6 feet away from the toilet bowl.

The harmful effects of this can be prevented if you give up the habit of leaving the toilet open when you flush.

A good way to remind yourself is by leaving a ‘‘CLOSE BEFORE FLUSHING’’ sign on your bathroom wall.

Ignoring Mild Toilet Problems

They are called mild problems because they do not cause immediate damage or pose any threat to you. But then, they will cause damages eventually and you’ll have to spend so much money trying to fix a problem you could have prevented from the onset.

These issues, no matter how mild, can be noticed on time and fixed easily. But, if you have the habit of ignoring seemingly small toilet issues like constant clogging, a weak flush handle, or running water, you are only giving the problem time to mature into something dangerous.

So take every irregularity seriously, and save yourself money and time.

Flushing Inappropriate Things Down The Toilet

This habit is one of the fastest ways to clog your toilet and give way to other piping problems in your home. That the toilet was made to swallow waste, doesn’t mean that just any waste should be thrown into the toilet bowl.

Only human waste should go inside the toilet, others belong to the trash can. As long as the waste does not emanate from your body, it has no business with the toilet, no matter how small or harmless it may look.

Keeping Your Toothbrush Close To The Toilet

We all grew up seeing the toothbrush on the counter, right around the toilet. So naturally, we made it a way of life in our own homes.

But, now that the dangers of such practise has been exposed, it is time to put an immediate stop to it.

The toothbrush is used to clean the mouth, and given all the activities that go on in a toilet, it is definitely not a place for your toothbrush.

Take it out of the toilet, your toothbrush is safer in a drawer or cabinet.

Flushing Only Once

There are times when flushing the toilet once isn’t enough, and there is no shame in admitting it. At such times, you have to let go of the habit of flushing just once.

Usually, the reason you should flush more than once has little to do with the type or amount of waste you deposit, but more with the toilet paper. Flushing twice will clear out every trace of toilet paper you used and leave the toilet presentable for the next user.

Cleaning With Harsh Chemicals

It is good to clean the toilet no doubt, but the use of harsh chemicals can cause damages to your toilet. The toilet glaze does not react well to harsh chemicals.

You may not see any reaction at first, but the root of the damage has already been set, and it won’t take long before the coating starts to peel off, which eventually lead to cracks.

If you use the toilet properly, you won’t have to hunt for harsh chemicals to use for cleaning. Always use mild cleaners for your toilet, they are the best for the job and will help improve your toilet’s lifespan.

Also, you’re exposing yourself to danger by using harsh chemicals. So, keep yourself safe by using mild chemicals to clean your toilet.

Using Liquid Drain Cleaners

If you have been using liquid drain cleaners for your toilet, you need to stop immediately. These liquid drainers are made with heavy chemicals that are harmful to you and your toilet pipes.

If you keep using these drain cleaners, your pipes will start wearing away. The process is slow but eventually, you will break the bank to repair, or even replace the pipes.

If you feel the need to unclog your toilet, use a plunger. Keep it close to your toilet for easy access whenever you need it.

Well said. I liked this part here:

That's the most important part. I was renovating my bathroom and toilet recently in my new home, I saw how the previous owners were neglecting those issues... That was terrible. But after consulting with friends and thanks to Gerald's blog I managed to clean everything and install a new toilet.

They also forgot to point out that you need to choose the right lid for the toilet, so that it was comfortable and easy to close with a microlift.
