All eyes glued on Burna Boy at the just concluded 2020 Grammy Awards but Burna Boy failed to come out victoriously as African music legend, Angelique Kidjo was declared the winner of the Best World Music Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards, a category where Burna Boy was also nominated.

The award which took place on the 26th of January, 2020 was Burna Boy’s first Grammy nomination and Nigerians and his fans all around the world were looking forward witnessing history with the African Giant as the winner.

In her words during her acceptance speech of her 4th Grammy Award she said..

Four years ago on this stage, I was telling you that the new generation of artistes coming from Africa are gonna take you by storm and this is for Burna Boy. Burna Boy is among the young artistes from Africa that is changing the way our continent is perceived and the way African music has been the bedrock of every music.

I was rooting for Burna Boy but I know Angelique Kidjo is a tough competitor. She has been winning in this category for years and I know his chances were slim with her in the nomination.

All the same, respect to Burna Boy. He is a true African Giant. Besides, it's no shame to lose out to a living legend like Angelique.

She was gracious with it. She celebrated every African artist. That’s how to accept an award.

I was shocked when some tweets suggested that the voting was rigged in her favour but I think they don’t know her and they don’t know that Burna Boy even sampled Angelique on “Anybody”.

ThIs category does not consider popularity and record sales, but technical proficiency. This means even Bokanté and Metropole Orkest would be considered ahead of Burna cos really I don’t know any other orchestra as technically crazy as those guys. Winners of this category have something in common: originality. Sampling is good for club bangers and street music but not good enough to win this award.

It is good that he got nominated on his own record. That is something none of his Nigerian contemporaries have.
