It’s no longer news that the ban of bikes and tricycles started on the 1st of February, 2020. Many persons, including those rejoicing for the ban, may not know the real impact of the ban until Monday when work starts.

Saturday, when the ban started, witnessed a huge number of persons who had to wait hours at bus stops waiting for vehicles to take them to their destinations while others revolted to trekking. The day looked cleaned up as the usual tricycles and bikes were out of sight.
While tricycles are used mostly for shorter distances - street to street, bikes do go on longer distances and are often seen on highways which is one of the major reasons they are banned as driving bikes on highways is prone to accidents that can cause instant deaths or extreme injury to the rider and passenger.

However, many have forgot so quickly. Most people do not welcome the idea of using bikes on the highway until the issue of consistent long traffic started in Lagos. The easier one that comes to memory is that of Eko Bridge where trucks are parked on the side of the bridge leaving little space for motorists to have their ways. Precious hours that would have been used for productive activities were wasted as a result of this. It got so bad that people joked about how to move in Lagos and the common advice is if you can’t drive from 12midnight to 4am, then become the governor or use a bike.

Trucks made bikes necessary evil. Bikes are expensive and not everyone can even afford to pay that much for the ride but people became insensitive to the hazards posed by these bikes when the traffic caused by these trucks became worse. It got so worse that even some people come out of their luxurious vehicles to pick up bikes on the highway when they’re left with no option than to get late to their meetings.

Apart from this, trucks have caused more severe problems to the state. The pollution is severe, not to talk of the accident and deaths caused by them. Notable among them are the accident caused at Ojuelegba and even Otedola bridge where fire from a tanker burnt many alive and properties lost.

If the LASG wants to insist on this ban then they must regulate the trucks otherwise the living conditions of Lagosians will be worse.
