Like it or not, as an undisputed and indisputable direct blood of Oduduwa, Alaafin's action is what real Yorubas, not Aborigines, refer to as "Igi gogoro ma gun mi l'oju". That is the core issue.

wiseoneking:
At least more than 5 Obas has been dethroned before now. Check history.

Yes, you are right but no single governor that dethroned a truly first class by tradition Oba or even insulted them has gone unscathed.

1. Alaafin Adeyemi in 1955 insulted by Bode Thomas, (a cabinet member of Awo) and dethroned due to this. Bode Thomas ran mad and barked till his death. The curse on Awo by the king when he left Oyo for Lagos was that Awo will net get to the office he cherishes and if he gets it he will regret it. The Kabieesi Ladigbolu that took over after him went blind.
His son is the current Alaafin. The current Alaafin was insulted by Governor Akala and Akala is now history in today's politics.

2. Awujale Adetona was deposed by Chief Bisi Onabanjo, he was reinstated by the Court on the 4th of May, 1984.
He outlived Onabanjo.

3.Olowo of Owo – Oba Olateru Olagbegi II
Unarguably the richest and most influential Olowo of Owo town in Ondo state, Oba Olateru became Olowo in 1941 and reigned till 1966 when he took side with Chief S.L Akintola against Chief Awolowo who was his ally. Of a fact, Awolowo Action Group party was founded right inside Olowo palace and Owo for years experienced political and kingship battle, which came to a climax in 1966 following a cold blooded coup with many properties and lives lost in the course. The people of Owo revolted their King and sent him away on exile where he lived for another 27yrs, and his stool was taken over by Oba Ogunoye. At the demise of Ogunoye, Olateru was reappointed as the new Olowo of Owo in 1993 and spent another 5yrs on the throne till he died in 1998. His eldest son, took over from him in 1999 and reigned for 20yrs.
He outlived Awo who died in 1987.

4. Dethroning a first class Oba or even an Emir seems to have effect on the perpetrators. Sadauna who dethroned many kings in the north died a horrific death. May his soul rest in peace. Awolowo lost premiership to Akintola and never became president which he so much coveted. He also lost a son while imprisoned. Many of the Obas and Kings no be ordinary eye dem dey take do am oo.

OROSUNBOLB:
In the olden days,Alaafin would have,by now, commanded Areonakakanfo to invade Ilawe and bring Alawe before him (Alaafin) for severe punishment. Historically, there are only sixteen "Pelupelu Oba" or "Oba alade merindinlogun" ( sixteen first class kings) in Ekiti state and Alawe is not one of them

Alawe is only taking advantage of democracy and the balkanization of Yoruba traditional order by the colonial rulers to act in this manner.. Is it not Ekiti state aggrieved kings who are at loggerhead with him that actually reported him to Alaafin ? And he has the effrontery to call Alaafin an interloper ! I know "Iku baba yeye" will still deal with him. History cannot be rewritten,Alawe is a lesser king in the hierarchy of Obas in Ekiti land.

Alaafin of Oyo in his most glorious powerful days never succeeded in putting Ekiti under him not to talk about the present figurehead obaship system. Aare Onakakanfo always lost his soldiers anytime he tried harnessing part of Ekiti.
If Ewi is spearheading this fight, it is unfortunate. Ado Ekiti link is more to Benin than Ife.
Let everyone bury the hatchet, no single Oba in Ekiti has control over another town save the attached villages that are under Baales.
Pelupelu was the making of colonialism, it is never based on historical facts. The 16 kings in Pelupelu were not recognized as having bigger power than other kings and its composition extends to part of present Kwara and Ondo states. Anyone counting 16 pelupelu obas in Ekiti is just deceiving himself.
By Ekiti law and government Gazette, there are 22 ist class obas and their present chairman is one of them since 1947.

Ekiti people are subgroup of the Yoruba, historically occupying the Ekiti country, which was made up of 16 kingdoms- Otun, Ikole, Ado, Oye, Ijero, Ido, Ikere, Ise, Emure, Effon, Okemesi (traditionally Imesi-Igodo), Ara, Isan, Itaji, Obo, Akure, and Ogotun. In 1882- the Awujale of Ijebu made mention of being an ally of “the 16 kings in Ekiti.” Samuel Johnson says that the Ekiti are a section of the aboriginal elements occupying Yorubaland before Oduduwa. Apparently, the people in this eastern districts comprises aborigines of the country and later immigrants. In reality, a majority claims to have come from Ile Ife, though there are sessions who maintains they came from easterly regions (mostly Benin) or from other places at different times. The story usually goes that even these people came from Ile Ife but went separately or in the company of the Oba of Benin, to the east, settling in Benin kingdom. For reasons that escaped records, they retraced their steps and finally settled in their present abode.

No single leader was acknowledged by the confederation of Ekiti kingdoms prior to the 19th Century. No two towns in Ekiti is known to have been ruled together by a single Ekiti ruler. The Ekiti dialect differs in varying degrees from one kingdom to another. Although there can be seen an Ekiti country characterized by hills and rocks, a 1933 Intelligence Report on Ikere by N.A.C. Weir posits that “the Ekiti people, if there are any such thing, are not a subgroup in the sense that the Egba, Ijebu are.” Each town, identified as Ekiti therefore are one because they live and occupy land in a district which takes its name owing to its hilly nature. These people, said CMS’s Hinderer in a journal of 1855, “love their liberty- and have been known in the hour of extremity to chose death rather than a life of slavery.”

Trade served as a great uniting factor for the Ekiti people. Women were often seen carrying their wares on their heads from one end of the Ekiti country to another. However, Ekiti was too fragmented to offer enough resistance to the mighty Benin empire when by the late 16th Century, forces penetrated as far as Otun in the extreme north of Ekiti country. The kingdoms gave their submission peacefully in most cases, but ignored or forgot the terms of submission thereafter because of the relatively great distance of their land form Benin and the inconsistency of the power of Benin. Evidence shows that Ekiti before the 19th Century, like other eastern Yoruba kingdoms, were drawn more towards the center of Benin than towards the center of Yoruba civilization. At intervals, Ekiti came under the old Oyo Empire. Igbomina, occupying the north of Ekiti was fully part of the empire but the rest of Ekiti kings only acknowledged the Alaafin at Oyo as a senior brother.

Ekiti did not suffer the effects of the decline of Oyo authority directly, but Fulanis from Ilorin, who, taking advantage of the empire’s fall, soon showed face at Otun, in the extreme north of Ekiti. Although they conquered most Igbomina villages with little difficulty, Omu-Ekiti proved to be a nut to crack, for its ranks had been filled with Oyo refugees who had learnt the Oyo Art of War. Managing to rise up once beaten, Otun served as a gate keeper to the rest of Ekiti southward. Once more, the hills and ruggedness of the Ekiti country rendered the Calvary warfare that was the hallmark of Fulani Ilorin’s army ineffective. By 1840, the Ibadan army, eager to enter dominance in the new post-Alafin Oyo order that was to emerge, had joined Ekiti warriors in expelling the Fulanis.

From 1854, Ibadan military garrison, which had become the most powerful state in the whole of Yorubaland set its eyes fully on Ekiti, the country which it has, after several minor expeditions, familiarized itself with. Six years later, most Ekiti towns had come under Ibadan. As aggression from Ibadan continued, the kingdoms started to realize they shared a common destiny.

Wokuti

Wokuti, name given to the mysterious death of Ibadan warriors at the hills of Ekiti in 1897 at the last Ibadan military campaign in eastern Yoruba country literally means “pile the corpses out of the way.” The Wokuti war was pursued on the Ibadan side under the leadership of Latosisa, but no mention of it was made even in Ibadan prior to the attack. In this war, neither Ogedengbe nor Aduloju, the arch-enemy warrirors of the Ibadan army was attacked, but it appears, Esugbayi, the ambitious warrior, friend to Ibadan, who ruled a large kingdom extending beyond Aiyede to Ekiti and Akoko lands. Esugbayi bourgeoining influence, historian, S.A. Akintoye believed, excited the suspicion and hostility of the Ibadan chiefs.

Latosisa, the Ibadan General’s bigger vision was to extend Ibadan conquest into far northeastern Yoruba countries- the latter day Kabba Division. In December 1875, he led his army into Ekiti and proceeded to Aiyede, capturing and securing the surrender of Esugbayi who now accepted his kingdom to be Ibadan protectorate and to pay tributes. The conquering Ibadan party missed their way, and forayed into dangerous terrains where many perished, in one probably exaggerated account, leaving only one alive.

Ekiti Parapo

Erstwhile hostile and uncooperative relations between Ekiti kingdoms reached a turning point in 1878 with the creation of an alliance with Ogedengbe as Chief Commander and with the political patronage of the Owa of Ilesa
. The alliance’s original purpose was to dislodge the Ibadan overlord. The emirate of Ilorin, seeing an opportunity in its contest against Ibadan for more territories, joined the Ekiti Parapo alliance in this campaign. Ekiti villages already under the control of the emirate joined their kindred who sough freedom from Ibadan influence. With the outbreak of Kiriji War, they pursued their goal of a glorious reunion.

A treaty was made in 1886, which passed Ekiti districts formerly under Ibadan control to the hands of the British. The part of Ekiti still under Ilorin began to revolt against the emirate, sometimes driving consols from their towns as recorded of the towns of Otun, Aiyede, and Ishan towns in 1896. An attempt to assert the emir’s authority led to a war at Erinmope, in which Ilorin suffered defeat. In spite of this victory, many Ekiti towns under the emirate were not joined politically with their kindred in Southern Nigeria until the first half of the 20th Century. When Otun Ekiti was finally transferred to Southern Nigeria in 1936, there remained only one Ekiti town left under Ilorin jurisdiction. Ekiti people are today contained in the political entity, Ekiti state of Nigeria, carved out of the old Ondo state in 1996.

The part in bold is false and inaccurate. The Ekiti Parapo Army was created by the 16 Pelupelu kings of Ekiti after Fabunmu Oraralada beaheaded an Ajele from Ibadan. The Pelupelu kings under the leadership of Oore at the time appointed Fabunmi of Omemesi as the commander of the Ekiti confederate army. Ogedengbe of Ilesa was never part of the formation of Ekiti parapo army. Fabunmi led the army for good nine out of the sixteen years that the war lasted.

Ogedengbe eventually agreed to join the war after he saw how the Ekitis were able to sustain the battle against Ibadan for nine years. In recognition of his age and experience as a seasoned warrior, Fabunmi voluntarily relinquished the leadership of the confederate army to him against the wishes of other Ekiti war commanders.

quote author=Geeoriginal post=87453714] Ekiti was never under Oyo empire. The attempt to extend the empire to part of Ekiti was what led to Ekiti parapo war, with Ibadan soldiers fighting against the Ekiti army led by Ogedemgbe agbogungboro and Fabunmi.
In the real sense, Alaafin was not a bigger king than other kings that are direct descendants of Oduduwa. Alaafin became rich and powerful at a point and overcame some Yoruba towns where such towns were made to pay "isakole" to Oyo. At no point was he able to get the whole of Yoruba under him.
I initially thought the Alaafin's letter was fake, where he was describing some obas as subordinate. The present chairman of Ekiti traditional rulers council has better claim to Oduduwa than some of the 16 obas in question.
Unfortunately, the 16 Obas are the making of the colonialist and making our traditions as subjects of colonialism decision is belittling.
The Alaafin ought to have come in to settle issues by talking to everyone involved instead of a letter with tone of a command to people that are not his subjects.
Nobody wrote any position in stone, the first class obas in Ekiti by my understanding are 22 in numbers and they are sovereign in each of their domain.

My brother you lacked the basic knowledge of Yoruba history and for your information the Sixteen years Ekiti-Parapo War
(1877-1893) which ended all wars in Yorubaland and coincided with the establishment of British Colonial Rule
in the hinterland of Yoruba country. I am bold to say that If British had not intervened in the war Ibadan armies would have won the war though it may drag on further. Ibadan was in total control of all the ekiti/ondo areas towns prior to that war and it is the overzealous of Ibadan representatives in those towns that actually caused the war.

He is right.
There is no such Yoruba culture.
Traditionally before colonialism Obas never met face to face.
The Oyo empire was just that ;an empire.
By definition that means it coopted or annexed the other Kingdoms by force and from time to time those same Kingdoms paid tribute to Benin

This is particularly true in Ekiti
The other Kingdoms never identified as Yoruba. Traditionally Yoruba as a term referred to Oyo people.
Awon Yoruba yen was a phrase used by Ijebus, Aworis etc to refer to Oyo or close neighbours.
Nigeria is what brought everyone under the "Yoruba" umbrella
When Oyo was betrayed by Afonja Ijebus never supported Oyo.
All these Kingdoms were either independent of Oyo or fighting for their independence.

By the time the British came Ibadan was a greater military force.
Even Ooni Sijuade said the same thing ,the Oyo empire is long dead .

The Alaafin should restrain himself to issues in his domain. This letter he has written is ikeja aiye. Making it public is disrespectful and insubordination to the Oyo state government.
The Alaafin has as much right to intervene as the Oba of Benin

There was and never will be any political entity like Yorubaland. The Alaafin should desist from issuing title OF YORUBA LAND.
Like Maiyegun or Aare. He should designate them OF OYO
