Yoruba by gbking(m): 8:15pm On Dec 23, 2010
Hi.
I am trying to learn Yoruba. Since I have been in the UK all my life I never really got taught the language.
Could someone tell me how to say the following in Yoruba:

Hello
How are you?
I love you
Goodnight
Thank you
What are you doing?

And any other basic phrases you can think of.

Also I am getting a few tattoos and I'd like to have the following in Yoruba:

Nigerian roots
Rest in peace
Only God can judge me

Thank you.

Thanks man. I hear my family speaking Yoruba and I have always wanted to pick up on it so I could teach my kids some of their roots that they wouldn't really see otherwise as I am only mixed race with a white partner. I am Nigerian and English, so my kids are quarter-caste (me being half-caste, mulatto, mixed race, what ever label you would like to put on it) and my girlfriend being white.

Those phrases are pretty easy to master I think, got any more?

Re: Yoruba by gbking(m): 9:13pm On Dec 23, 2010

Re: Yoruba by gbking(m): 9:53pm On Dec 23, 2010
Hit me with insults and I'll learn them.
Oseun everybody by the way.

I have a question though. Is Yoruba grammar the same as English? Do you put things in the same order?
Also, I've looked through some posts and people are speaking fluent Yoruba and then have a random English word in there. Why is this??
Re: Yoruba by tayoast(m): 9:55pm On Dec 23, 2010
that happens wen pple esp d younger generation r tryna speak 'touche' yoruba.

They mix English in between.
Re: Yoruba by Dsense(m): 10:00pm On Dec 23, 2010
Having a random words mixed with yoruba is normal . . .We enjoy speaking it so much!
These are some insullts in Yoruba . . . .

Oloshi  = Misfortunate or poor.
Omoale = Bastaarrd .
Ewure/ Ogunfe = a goat.
Ode = Dumb.
Ole = Thief.
Olodo = Novice or Loser.
Re: Yoruba by gbking(m): 10:03pm On Dec 23, 2010

@gbking, u can also call sm1 a eranko buburu (wild animal)

e.g. Idowuogbo is a wild animal

     Eranko buburu ni idowuogbo. . . . no offense
Re: Yoruba by gbking(m): 10:18pm On Dec 23, 2010
So in Yoruba you would say:

Eranko buburu ni tayo_ast
(Wild animal is tayo_ast)

instead of

tayo_ast is a wild animal?
Re: Yoruba by tayoast(m): 10:22pm On Dec 23, 2010

You'll say, eranko buburu ni gbking

Re: Yoruba by gbking(m): 10:31pm On Dec 23, 2010
