A boy has tragically died following injuries sustained after being savagely attacked by dogs in Dublin.

The eight-year-old boy was fighting for his life overnight after the shocking incident on Sunday afternoon, reports the Irish Mirror.

He was rushed to Tallaght Hospital shortly after the attack which happened at around 4pm.

The boy was later transferred to Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin where he was in a critical condition.

Gardai confirmed on Monday afternoon that the boy had sadly passed away.

A garda spokesman said: "The 8 year old male child who was seriously injured yesterday Sunday 22nd March 2020 following a reported attack by a number of dogs in the Tallaght area passed away this morning Monday 23rd March 2020 at Children's Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin."

Officers confiscated the dogs and have notified the dog warden.

A full investigation into this incident is underway by police at Tallaght Garda Station.

In September last year the Mirror Online published the first picture of 44-year-old Elayne Stanley who was mauled to death by her two pet dogs.

The powerful "American bulldog type" animals reportedly turned on her as she rowed with her daughter inside her home in Widnes, Cheshire.

Neighbours rushed into the terraced house and desperately tried to save Ms Stanley - hurling bricks at the dogs to fight them off - after hearing harrowing screams, but said she "didnt stand a chance".

Meanwhile, in October Mary Rollinson, 73, was mauled by a huge pitbull which jumped from the bushes and dragged her into a pond "like a lion attacking an antelope".

It took five men to fend off the ferocious animal, which ripped off part of the elderly woman's arm, part of her finger, and mauled her face.

One of her rescuers was bitten himself as he rushed to Ms Rollinson's aid.
