(CNN)World Health Organization officials Monday said they still recommend people not wear face masks unless they are sick with COVID-19 or caring for someone who is sick.

In fact, there's some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask properly or fitting it properly," Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergency program, said at a media briefing in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, an infectious disease epidemiologist with the WHO, also said at Monday's briefing that it is important "we prioritize the use of masks for those who need it most," which would be frontline health care workers.
"In the community, we do not recommend the use of wearing masks unless you yourself are sick and as a measure to prevent onward spread from you if you are ill," Van Kerkhove said.
"The masks that we recommend are for people who are at home and who are sick and for those individuals who are caring for those people who are home that is sick," she said.

I even saw driving his Jeep with no one with him and was on his nose masks.

Why are doctors wearing them? In fact, majority of them wear the blue nose mask most people are wearing here.

Corona doesn't infect people through direct contact rather through contact with infected droplets.

Nose mask will do these 4 things

1. It is not 100% safe but will protect you when someone coughs directly on you or you come in contact with "free floating" droplets. You only get infected if you fail to disinfect or wash the mask after each use.

2. Nose mask will prevent you from touching your mouth by reflex

3. Nose mask will prevent you from picking your nose.

4. When you wear mask your consciousness is heightened and this means you become aware when you want to touch your eyes

If the masks are not effective, then most of our doctors should have been infected by now.

You said those caring for sick ones should wear it, what if don't know the next person's status due to absense of test labs (Nigeria have only 6 nationwide with hope of making it 13 by next week).

This means we have no way of knowing who has it.

If Nigeria mandated wearing of face mask since Jan, we might have low case of coronovirus now since chances of contacting it will be low.

As an Applied Biochemist, I urge you all to disgregard this information and wear your face mask if you have one especially when leaving your house.. Add disposable glove too
