As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread across the world particularly Nigeria, the question on the lips on many is whether or not the lockdown which started on 30th of March in Lagos and FCT will be extended.

To answer this question and in considering the possibility of a lockdown extension in Lagos, it is important to analyze the COVID-19 cases in Lagos before and after the lockdown. The first case of coronavirus in Nigeria was discovered February 27th. The Italian man returned to Lagos from Milan February 24 and went to Ogun state a
day after. It was in Ogun his case was discovered and moved to Lagos. Even the second case was a contact of the
first case discovered March 9 in Ogun state too.

By 13th March, a flight arrived Lagos and that was where it all started in full force. A woman who traveled in from the UK on the March 13th flight tested positive for COVID-19, 17th March. With this, we could say the first case discovered in Lagos was on 17th March.

At this time, Lagos was managing all 3 cases in Nigeria (2 from Ogun, 1 discovered in Lagos). By 18th March,
there were additional 4 cases in Lagos bringing the number to 7 in Lagos, 8 in Nigeria. Another 4 became positive
by 19th march bringing Lagos cases to 11.

On that same 19th, Lagos recorded the first local transmission out of the 4 recorded cases; A Nigerian male in
his 50s never traveled anywhere presented with symptoms and was tested positive of the virus and has been admitted. By 20th, index case was discharged. By 21st, Lagos got another 7 cases bringing the total to 18. But at this time, first 2 cases had recovered. 3 cases were discovered 22nd March bringing total in Lagos to 21. Another 3 were discovered same 22nd bringing the total to 24cases but if you remove the 2 from Ogun, Lagos has 22 discovered cases. By 23rd, there were 3 confirmed cases bringing Lagos discovered cases to 25.

24th March saw 4 new cases bring the total number to 29 cases in Lagos and before the end of 24th March, 1
more case was discovered in Lagos bringing the total to 30.
On 26th March, 2 new cases were announced; with the total now 32 in Lagos but surprisingly before the end of the same day, Lagos got 12 new cases taking the number to 44. 27th March saw the addition of 8 new cases bringing it up to 52 and another 7 cases were recorded 28th March leaving Lagos with a total of 59. 9 cases were confirmed 29th March and with that Lagos had 68 cases. By 30th March, same day the Lockdown started, Lagos had 13 confirmed cases bringing the total to 81.

Now, fast forward to 10days after lockdown; by 9th April 2020, Lagos has a total of 158 COVIDー19 cases.
Of the 158 overall cases in Lagos;
39 have been discharged, 3 deaths, 2 evacuated, and 114 active cases.
This implies that Lagos has recorded 77 new cases within 10days of lockdown with indications that local
transmission is increasing.

Looking at the statistics I just gave for Lagos COVID-19 records with; 81 cases before lockdown, 77 new cases 10days after lockdown. That is, 81 cases in 13days & 77cases in 10days

Do you think the end is in sight?

Would you support an extension of lockdown in Lagos?
