Elijah was transferred/ transported to another earthly location , not heaven.

A forerunner signifies someone who goes in advance to a place where the rest are to follow.Nobody goes to this place before the forerunner. Christ, being our forerunner, opened heaven for the new creature. Elijah was not redeemed at that moment so he wasn’t a new creature. Therefore, he couldn’t have ascended to heaven.

In addition to being the forerunner, Christ is also our first fruit.

“But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming,”

The Hebrew word for first fruit is bikkurim—literally translated to “promise to come.” That is ,promise of the same kind. Now to the small matter of Elijah ascending to heaven in 2 Kings 2:1, it was already explained that the heaven is indeed air or sky, and not the habitation of God. He was transported so that his body was not found. The same happened to Enoch and Moses.
