Bonfrere, Amuneke, Yobo Combo Best For Eagles’ Next Level –Akwuegbu

Former Nigeria striker, Benedict Akwuegbu has posited that a combination of Dutchman Jo Bonfrere, Emmanuel Amuneke and Joseph Yobo will be a good combination of coaches to drive the Super Eagles greater heights in African and global football, if the NFF and Gernot Rohr’s contract extension negotiation fails to materialize, Completesports.com reports.
“Amuneke and Yobo will make a fantastic combination,” Akwuegbu said.

“The two hold envious records in the game for the Super Eagles and equally played for the biggest clubs in Europe.

“And when you bring in a coach like Bonfrere Jo who is not only experienced but knows so much about Nigeria and African football particularly Nigerian players, it means Super Eagles are on the way to their best glory in Africa and World football.”

Recently, Nduka Ugbade charged Super Eagles to match their rating in the game with action by surpassing Ghana Black Stars’ quarter-final feat at the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa.

Akwuegbu who is called ‘Austria Bomber’ says that feat is not far from actualisation if NFF puts in place the trio of Amuneke, Yobo and Bonfrere.

“Rohr has not really fared badly, but in the face of the unfolding dispute over contract terms, I think bringing back Bonfrere to work with Amuneke and Yobo is the best option,” he added.

“With Jo Bonfrere as technical adviser, Amuneke as Head Coach with Yobo as an Assistant Coach, Eagles are sure headed for the top once again.

“It is my candid conviction that with support, winning the Nations Cup and qualifying for the World and going far beyond the quarterfinals would not just be our target but our birthright.

“We’ve the talents, but all that is needed is the technical combination that will drive our possible first World Cup victory and I believe this combination can deliver that mandate.”

On suggestion that Bonfrere may not be physically strong enough considering his age and might only function better as Technical Director, Akwuegbu disagrees.

Bonfrere will be 74 years old on June 15,.2020.

“It’s not about age. It’s about experience and capability. Besides, he would work with younger coaches – Amuneke and Yobo. That will make a perfect blend,” Akwuegbu submitted.

Johannes-Franciscus Bonfrère (born 15 June 1946) is a Dutch football coach and former midfielder who spent his playing career with MVV Maastricht. In a long coaching career Bonfrère managed several teams in Africa and Asia. He guided Nigeria to their victory in the 1996 Olympic Games.

between 1963 and 1985 Bonfrère scored 50 goals in 335 league appearances for MVV Maastricht, his only club.[1]

Coaching career:

Nigeria:
Bonfrère led Nigeria national football team to the 1996 Summer Olympics gold medal in Atlanta, Georgia.[2] He was the coach of Al Ahly in Egypt in 2002/03 where he lost the league at the very last match with a difference of two points. His contract was terminated after that.

He also led Nigeria to the 2000 African Cup of Nations co-hosted by Nigeria and Ghana. Bonfrère led the Nigerian team to the finals, where they lost to Cameroon by penalties.

On June 7th 2018, Jo was offered a 3 bedroom apartment by the Nigerian government as part of the promise made by late General Sanni Abacha after winning the gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics for Nigeria.

Asia and South Korea:

He was hired to coach the South Korea national football team in June 2004 to replace Humberto Coelho, who was forced to quit after a draw with the Maldives national football team in a FIFA World Cup qualification. The Dutch coach got off to a promising start by crushing a highly rated German squad of World Cup stars such as Michael Ballack and Oliver Kahn, 3-1, with a young Korean team in a friendly match in December 2004. In 2005, South Korea qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup under him, but a string of disappointing losses thereafter fueled fan and media ire against Bonfrère.[3] He resigned on 23 August that year after poor results in the East Asian Football Championship and a World Cup qualifier loss against Saudi Arabia. Korea Football Association then hired Dick Advocaat as its third Dutch coach, and Advocaat angered his predecessor by saying he will be another Guus Hiddink, not Bonfrère.

Bonfrère joined former Chinese Super League champions Dalian Shide on a one-year contract in the 2007 league season. Despite the team finishing fifth in the league, they were never in contention to win the title and opted not to extend his contract. On 29 June 2011, another Chinese Super League club Henan Construction announced that Bonfrère would lead the team on a 1+1 contract and fight for staying in the Super League.

In February 2015, Bonfrère was added to the MVV youth team staff.

On 25 May 2017, China League One club Baoding Yingli Yitong F.C. signed a one-year

Emmanuel Amunike (born 25 December 1970) is a Nigerian former professional football player, who played as an winger. and a football coach.[1][2]

Playing career:
He played for Zamalek, Sporting CP, Barcelona, and Albacete.

Amunike played 27 times for Nigeria, scoring nine goals.[3] He was part of the team that participated at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, scoring against Bulgaria and Italy;[4][5] also in that year, he helped the Super Eagles win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, eventually being voted African Footballer of the Year.

Additionally, Amunike played all the games at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, scoring the winning goal in the final as the national team won the gold medal.[6] Knee problems kept him out of the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Managerial career:
on 23 December 2008, Amuneke took on training duties for some teams in Nigeria, after completing two years of training courses in Europe.

Amunike coached the Nigeria national U17 football team to win the World Cup in 2015. On 6 August 2018, he was appointed as the coach of the Tanzania national football team.He managed to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, but he resigned from training the team after losing all three games in November 2019, he said he was looking for a new job.

Joseph Michael Yobo (born 6 September 1980) is a Nigerian former professional footballer who played as a centre back. He was the captain of the Nigerian national team until his international football retirement in June 2014, and is Nigeria's joint record appearance holder. On 12 February, 2020 he was appointed Assistant coach of the Nigeria Super eagles

International career:
Yobo is a former Nigeria international, who has been capped 101 times and represented the Super Eagles at three FIFA World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

After participating in Nigeria's run to the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship quarter-finals, Yobo made his senior international debut against Zambia in a 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier on 24 March 2001.He played in all six of the team's matches in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations[21] and was included in the squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where he was again ever-present, assisting Julius Aghahowa's goal in a 2–1 loss to Sweden.[22]

Yobo made his second World Cup appearance at the 2010 tournament in South Africa, after which he assumed the captaincy on the international retirement of Nwankwo Kanu. The veteran defender was no longer a first choice player at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, but lifted the trophy after appearing as an 89th-minute substitute in Nigeria's 1–0 final defeat of Burkina Faso.

In June 2014, Yobo was included in Stephen Keshi's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was named in the starting line-up for both the second and third group matches, helping the Super Eagles to clean sheet in a 1–0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.[25] On 30 June, he made his 100th international appearance, captaining Nigeria against France in the round of 16. After scoring an own goal in the 2–0 defeat, Yobo announced his international retirement, saying: "This is it. I can look back on my career with great pride. I wanted to leave on a high for my country. Defeat by France was not the right way to go but I'm happy with all I've done for the national team. It's time to give a chance to other people to come through."
