At least 17 people were said to have been killed when a fighter jet belonging to the Nigerian Air Force fired a bomb on Sakotoku village in Damboa local government area of Borno state.

Residents told TheCable that those killed included women, and children who were said to be playing under mango trees.

The air force, military sources said, was informed that Boko Haram insurgents were gathering around the village on Thursday afternoon.

The supposed target, according to a source, was an area in Korongilum, a neighbouring village 12 kilometres away where suspected Boko Haram insurgents had gathered earlier.

“We don’t know if they didn’t communicate well with the land troops as the air force jet fired that bomb on the village,” one of the sources said.

“Seventeen people were killed, mostly women and their children playing under mango trees. Many were also injured and have been taken to the 25 army brigade in Damboa, and those with critical injuries were taken to Maiduguri.”

Some of the villagers whose houses were destroyed have found their way to Damboa.

In February, residents of Garkida, Adamawa state and Korongilum, Borno state, had alleged that NAF fighter jets refused to open fire on suspected Boko Haram insurgents when they attacked their communities.

Ibikunle Daramola, NAF spokesperson, had then told TheCable they could not engage the insurgents because the situation in Garkida was chaotic, and that they took the measure so they would not hit civilians.

In 2017, 126 civilians were killed in Rann, Borno state, in an accidental air strike by the military.

When TheCable contacted about the incident in Sakotoku, Daramola said: “It’s a matter of operation” and the defence headquarters would be in a better position to speak on the matter.”

Both Onyema Nwachukwu and John Enenche, defence headquarters spokespersons, were not reachable for comment as they neither responded to calls nor replied text messages.

That's the only thing they know how to do best...shooting and bombing off targets, while their chadian counterparts are busy hitting boko haram hard on target.

We learnt Chadian president has taunted Nigerian govt on possible moves on the release of boko haram terrorists in their custody and has equally warned his troops never to release the captives to the Nigerian army as the former would still find their way into lake chad to disrupt their peace, if released.

I think something is wrong somewhere. It's high time the fed govt began telling us the truth on their stance on their fight against boko haram insurgents. Now that buratai has left for Borno, I hope his mission wouldn't be to meet with Chadian troops and plead for the release of the terrorists, those who don't deserve to live in the first place. Here's the link for doubting thimases to read on Derby's warnings.

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME!!! they keep bombing innocent people.

Even if they most employ people based on man know man. At least critical sectors like security, economy etc. Should be strictly based on competence & qualified hands. All our finance minister does is ask for laons, our armed forces shoots & bomb innocent civilians.

That what we get for employing people based on connection instead of competence.

After watching the movie "eye in the sky" i begin to understand why the synergy between the airforce and the military has been very difficult. The airforce find it difficult to bomb terrorist locations even when the army is under sustained gun fire simply because they are civilian within the environment and the have to follow international laws in terms of their rules of engagements.Unfortunately the bloody terrorist give no hoot about any law they use the civilians as shield, sometimes i wish the Nigeria Army can contract this war out to itself by forming an Elite unit that can do the dirty jobs on their behalf and who would not be directly affliated with them and who can serve shield them from any international enquire because this is an unconventional war and the terrorist knows no rules.
