Happy weekend people!
I dont even know where to start. I'm just kinda angry with my parents about how they treated puberty and sex education.
I know some nairalanders are in same shoes as me, how was growing into puberty like for you? How well did you parents educate you about sex? This is a very sensitive area of a child's life that African parents most time shy away from. You see yourself changing gradually into an adult and nobody tells you anything.
My parents did NOTHING, I guess my dad believed it's a woman's duty to educate her girl child or whatever yet she failed too. My mum didnt tell me a single thing about puberty or sex, not even about menstruation. It was like a year after I started seeing it before I told her, I just felt angry towards her, and when I did told her, just as expected she waved it off as nothing and didnt talk about it again.
It usually doesnt go beyond 'dont let a boy touch you' touch me where exactly?? When parents fails at teaching these, the kids would learn it outside from street smart people in a way that isn't cool.
I dont know if am totally right, or if sex education would prevent teenagers from having sex anyhow, but at least that teen would know what he or she is getting into, rather than doing it out of naivety.
Parents here, pls how are you changing the narrative with your kids? I have so many things to say as I get more engagement on this thread.
@RoyalRoy @lalasticlala @Mynd44 I believe this is front page worthy

*Sigh

I was in your shoes. I was never told/taught anything. All I knew about sex and sexuality was through reading and exploring.

I became aware of erections in primary 2 and I was always terrified when I got one and even more terrified of telling my parents because I was sure they'd beat the leaving daylight out of me for having one.

In Js3, my dad used to give me painful knocks on my head when I give a girl side hugs(saying goodbye) after church. He always said I'm not supposed to go close to girls and that's why he sent me to an all boys school.

Thank God I wasn't an addict or abused.

This is really not nice of our parents. They expect that we know these things, even when they refuse not to talk about it

You don't have to blame your parent.. There are sensitive topics people find difficult to talk about. As u know, some people are introverted while some are extroverts.

Some might be thinking, which mouth will I use to start telling my children about sex.. I'm I saying this to encourage them or discourage them.. Those were the struggles a lot of parents have within them. So they chose the best alternative which was to be quiet... It's easier for young people to say that parents did nothing or said nothing. But when you get to that stage, you will definitely understand their struggle... That's why some of these topics were on school curriculum just to help the kids as well as the parents who cannot talk.

But for those who can talk about it, it is highly encouraged, Those who can't talk about it, don't crucify them.. they were simply uncomfortable talking about it.. Though I wish all parents can talk to their kids about it.. more especially the girl child. So that they don't have to be afraid when they were experiencing their period.

It all boils down to not having a really close relationship with their children.

They won't talk about it. The only thing they will discuss with you is "when are you going to marry". You see african parent and anything that has to do with sex issues ehn. Have you tried watching a sex movie scene with ur parent before?

Long time ago, I was watching Super Story with my mum. So in the middle of that, there was an advert about Always sanitary pad.. So I think they were saying that if u don't want to embarrass yourself use Always. So my nephew (10yrs) who came on holidays ask my mum." I have seen advert on this Always a lot, What is it?..."

Instead of my mum to answer, she went on attack grin She asked him, since you have been here on holidays, have you opened your books once? The boy was confused.. I laughed to the extent of choking .. My nephew's face was priceless to see because he was wondering what his crime was...

I asked my mum so instead of telling him what he needed to know you were using parents avoiding tactics.. she was like why don't you tell him. I told her the question was not mine but hers.. though I told him what always was meant for. But Some parents can be really embarrassed over nothing.. smiley

I will. It's just so annoying seeing her trying to talk about sex now(,in a weird way). I am over 20, so in her mind she feels I must have known about it.

I think it would be easier to talk about sex education when you bond with your children early enough.it would create the opportunity of them telling you most of the things they go through. The male and female organs could be nicknamed so as to find it easier to talk about. Majority of our parents were not given that form of education so they find it difficult educating their children too.it's highly rewarding for parents to start early to teach the children about these things rather than allowing a total stranger to do so.

I guess my science and biology classes helped a lot.

So I woke one Saturday morning to discover my trouser was very wet around my penis region, I thought I had bed-wetted. I was really scared because that was a habit I thought I dropped at the age of 4. On closer examination, I discovered it was not urine but some slimy liquid with the odour of pap. I washed myself up quickly and headed straight to my father

Me: Something funny is happening to me.
Father: What is it?
Me: I woke this morning to discover slimy liquid on my trouser.
Father: See, if you go near any girl at all. You are dead.
Me: I don't understand
Father: I have told you.

Due to my curiosity, I had to inquire from my friends who later told me was a wet dream and I was now a Man.

They've got no excuse....

Nobody taught me shit ....
I explored, read practiced, watched...etc...
That was how I knew....

If parents fail to teach their children about sex education, they have failed ....
Because 2moro maybe if the guy gets a girl pregnant, the parents will be angry at the boy meanwhile they are at fault......

parents that cannot teach their children about sex education have failed......

There's nothing like when you get to dat stage......
As a parent my children will be taught about it from tender age.....

I'll advise you no matter how shamed you might feel please do teach them ...
I'm saying this from experience......

To say you have a good relationship with your daughter then you should be free to teach her sex education.....or else maybe or someone else will and please do not shout foul......

Once she becomes a teen, sex education is important.

If you have a great relationship with her, talking about sex will be like talking about everything else.

Nothing good comes out of the street aside from exploitation, vulnerability. That is why it is said that kids of strict parents have the most sex. Its starts from their naivety to exploration. Exploring sex their parents never talked about and of course sex isn't that bad cheesy

I know that it's important my brother... I also know how easy it was to type on a platform/ online like this to say teach your kids sex education.. but in reality, it was a different ballgame...

Many parents might 'swear' that they are doing it but it's just pure lies. If not, many teachers around the world won't be complaining that the parents left the responsibility of sex education for them to handle. And if they try to do that, some will start complaining that their kids were too young to learn such..

I don't know why I feel that you were exaggerating this.. There are lots of people who were not taught a single thing about sex yet they turned out to be wonderful people.. I still think it got nothing to do with relationship with the children. Some might have very good relationship with their kids still feel uncomfortable talking about sex in their presence

Your last sentence is wrong and should and can never be justified .......

Don't you think I'm a wonderful person.. shocked grin grin grin

Why do you feel I'm exaggerating it......

I wasn't taught any sh**.....
I made some almost terrible mistakes, I almost made some.......

No matter what......whether shy or not every parent must teach their children about sex education......
Or else somebody else will....
Or they'll learn it the hard way....
But don't blame them if they fail (in a case where you didn't teach them)

How can a relationship be GOOD and uncomfortable at the same time? If it's so good, then shouldn't all topics be open for discussion? If it's good, then they'll navigate the subject any way.
