Chapter 1
From The 19th Century

It was 6:00am when my dad yelled out my name. I groaned internally before sluggishly getting on my feet and dashing for the sitting room

On reaching, i collapsed on my favorite couch. My dad had made himself a cup of coffee and was glancing through the pages of the day's newspaper.
"Dad good morning"I greeted. He observed me for some seconds before replying "Morning son. How's your arm" he asked, flipping through some pages.

"Suprisingly alright" i i replied yawning loudly. "Dad, is mom back?" I asked sitting up.
"Not yet"he replied,masking his worry
Just then,his phone
began making beep sounds. I watched silently as he adjusted his frame to get the phone. "So dad, when can i get a new phone? its been 2 weeks now" i asked, smiling partially. He ignored me and stared blankly at his phone screen which had by now, ceased the beep sounds.
"Dad?" I called out , trying to get his attention but his gaze seemed fixated on whatever he was looking at.
Though it was quite low, i heard it, his breath was laboured and seemed to come in gasps. I knew something wasn't right.
"Dad! Are you alright!" I asked, jumping off the couch and running towards him. He slowly placed his hands on his chest and slumped forward, shattering the almost empty cup of coffee and spilling its contents on the carpet.
"Dad! Dad! Whats the problem??" I shouted, shaking his now unconscious body which had already began getting cold. I suppprted his frame on the table and dashed for his room. I ran back out with a bunch of keys and lifted him unto my shoulders. He didn't weigh much so i lifted him with much ease.
While carrying him along, his phone slipped off and crashed on the floor.

I lay him on the back seat with shaky hands and ran to the driver's door. I had only driven a vehicle that belonged to a guy on campus and that was like a year ago. I really needed to get to a hospital so i marched the pedal animatedly and sped off. I glanced at the little clock by the steering, it read 6:45 am. Luckily, a hospital was few blocks away from our apartment.

I halted the vehicle with a loud screech and flung the driver's door open. I quickly carried my dad roughly out and ran towards to hospital entrance. Midway in, nurses ran out with a stretch and assisted me. I waited just outside the ward room. It felt like hours before i was addressed by the doctor in charge.
He spoke fluently to me "Young man, be calm, your dad had a mild heart burn but he'll be fine"he said, giving me a re-assuring smile. I released a long-held breath on hearing this "so when can he be discharged?" I asked with relief.
He paused in thoughts before replying " maybe at sundown, He should be discharged by then" he replied before excusing himself.
On looking around the hospital building, i observed the unusual business and rowdiness of the hospital's reception with people being rushed in, almost in the same condition as my dad.
I left the hospital building just as the tall hospital clock struck 10:30 am and headed for the sienna car which had a long shared history with my family.
"I better head to school" i murmured. I was in my final year in the university of Nigeria,Nsukka and it was really hectic, keeping up with the activities but that wasn't my reason for heading there now, i just needed a distraction... I made a brief stop at our apartment to tidy up and pick up some notes before heading for school
"Wow, driving isn't so hard" i thought while driving the car to a stop at the campus' parking lot.

I stepped into the massive faculty building and walked down the hallways . I'd gotten used to being invisible to my fellow students. I watched sadly as students laughed and chatted amongst themselves but i was never a part of this. Some students who felt alienated like myself just typed noisily on their phones but unfortunately, i also did not have one. I felt so odd.

Lectures felt like forever, with me sleeping at intervals until it finally came to an end. Coming out of the lecture hall, the usually busy hallways were suprisingly dark and quiet. Coming out to the parking lot, same was the case.
I glanced behind me but my coursemates were nowhere to be found. Out of fear, i rushed into the vehicle and shut the door. 'Today is really a weird day' I thought, driving off. While driving back to the hospital, i took a detour that ran behind our apartment but from the look of the apartment, mom wasnt still back.

On reaching the hospital, i began memorizing the sympathetic speech i would deliver to the doctor regarding my inability to settle the hospital bill on that day.
I got out of the car and pushed the Hospital's double door ajar. I was shocked to see the number of unconscious patients scattered all over the reception and even down the hospital's hallways.
I began having an unsettling thought that something was just not right but it didn't concern me that much.

After being granted access to enter my dad's ward room, i pushed the blue wooden door but i regretted. I wept at the sight before me.

CHAPTER 2
NOWHERE IS SAFE

Though my dad wasn't conscious, he appeared conscious. His eyelids were open and his eyeballs, bloodshot. His nose bled freely and his skin was dotted all over by whitish particles. I didn't know when tears began streaming down my eyes. I barely found my voice when i screamed out to the doctor.
He rushed in few minutes later and he looked very pale himself. "Doctor, you said he would be alright" I managed to whimper, heart wrenched. The doctor sighed out of frustration and tried consoling me. Just then, we heard someone calling for the doctor . The doctor glanced sadly at my dad before preparing to leave. "You can stay by his side" he whispered before dashing for the door. I could literally feel my dad's pain on looking at his facial expression. I went closer to his face and whispered into his ear "It will be alright" I managed to say, sitting next to him. Not long after, I drifted into a troubled sleep.
I woke up confused, not knowing how long i had slept. I looked out through the window and noticed the sun had set. Looking around the room, something seemed missing, then i heard it. The steady sound of the heart monitor just beside my dad was now a long unending beeeee sound. I checked if my dad was breathing but he wasn't. I placed my ear on his chest, his heartbeat was still steady. I was confused about this occurence. "Doctor!" I screamed and waited. No reply. "Doctor!" I screamed once more, this time, the blue wooden door creaked open, revealing the doctor. He observed what was going on and also appeared suprise.
"This is Strange" he said, bringing up his cell phone from his pocket. I heard him punch the key pad for few seconds before i heard some beep sounds, exactly like the ones my dad's phone also made. I silently wondered if this was some new type of general phone ringtone. Few seconds later, i heard the doctor's phone crash to the ground. I turned quickly and to my horror, he held his chest in pain and slumped to the ground. "Doctor?" I called out, moving closer to him only to be interrupted by a light voice at my back. I quickly turned, expecting to see a nurse but to my suprise, my dad was getting out of bed . "Ah!" I screamed excitedly and ran to hug him. I threw my hands out towards him but at the last minutes, i realized something, it wasn't him anymore. He had a blank expression and just looked angry. "Dad?" I called out fearfully. He began speaking random words i couldn't make any sense out of. Milli seconds later, he had lurched for my throat. I was lucky enough to have dodge his attack but he landed on the unconscious doctor. Before my brain could register what was happening, my dad had bitten into the doctor's neck with his bare teeth. I was startled, standing motionless. My dad slowly moved his gaze up, to where i stood. My legs immediately moved me out of the room in a sprint and the door banged loudly behind me. I slapped myself very hard across my face twice in a bid to ensure i wasn't dreaming. I collapsed on the floor of the hallway and all that came to my mind to do was to cry, which i did.
I was interrupted by a light voice from the opposite room, and then , random words which i couldn't understand. I got up and went near the door to the opposite room. I listened silently but the sounds had stopped. I slowly opened the door but i was immediately knocked off my feet as a pale skinned lady swung herself at me. She regained her balance and lurched forward, throwing her weight on me. "Please stop" i whimpered. she opened her dentition very wide which now appeared different as she was about taking a bite off my leg. At this point, i could do nothing so i begged for my life but she appeared not to be listening.
While bringing down her teeth on my foot, she paused midway and suddenly fell flat to the ground. I quickly pushed back my legs and looked up. A girl, about 24(my age), fair skinned and not tough looking stretched out her hands to me. I quickly took it and stood up "thannks" i stuttered breathlessly. She ignored me and began walking fast, leaving a trail of blood formed by the blood dripping dagger she gripped tightly.
"What's going on!" I yelled behind her
She turned back swiftly and ran towards me, putting a hand on my mouth. "I just saved your life, do me a favour and die when am gone". She stopped talking and took in a deep breath before continuing " Am sorry, something has unfortunately taken place. People are going nuts so you better be quiet in whatever you---" she was immediately interrupted as about 30-50 infecteds came running from both paths of the hallways. Fear gripped me as I heard doors being torn apart by these newly birthed monsters. We were trapped!. She swiftly pulled my hand and ran towards a human sized glass window and made us of both to dive out of it. " No! no!" I yelled as we kept on falling to our deaths. We landed abruptly on a heap of dirt bags behind the hospital.
"Oh my God, am going crazy" i soliloquized. She suddenly jumped down from the dirt bags and began running. I was confused until i felt a heavy thud at my back. "Shit!" I cursed as i also jumped down the pile of dirts and began running towards her direction. In twos, the infecteds came crashing down through the shattered window. We ran to the parking lot and began walking as silently as possible, all the while, observing the cars as we passed them. We got to an open car which contained an infected. She took him/it out and got into the driver's seat. "Come on" she called out to me as she turned the key which was already inserted. I hurriedly got into the passenger's seat, gasping for breath.
"Looks like we're stuck together" she said in a low tune, staring into an empty space. I sank tiredly into the seat. "Am Karen" she introduced. "Oh,am Ga-andy" I stammered, shaking visibly
"What of my dad? Even though He's been behaving weird, i think he's trapped" I announced to her. She looked sadly at me before we sped out of the parking lot.

Lol why do you guys always have this feeling that Nairaland Writers don't always finish their stories... Lmaoo. Sometimes this occurs due to the writer not planning ahead. In this case they thrive on what we describe as panthsing. So when the ideas run dry they pfoof. But if you know the end I your story from the beginning, I don't see why you can't finish it. Lol.... ND MOST TIMES LACK OF COMMENTS AND ENCOURAGING WORDS( EVEN constructive criticism no matter how negative. can go a long way to motivate the writer.)

Anyway my two cent tho. cheesy

What I really believe is that a writer must have written it down before copy pasting. ..
