As much as you like to self-publish your ebook, you must be careful to ensure that readability is not eroded.

It has become necessary to talk about this because what many people refer to as an ebook is only a mere conversion of their document to PDF.

Though this could also be seen as a form of ebook, so to say, real electronic publications (epub) is beyond a mere conversion to PDF.

It is understandable that this practice could have stemmed from lack of understanding that epub is totally different from print version.

Hence, to produce a real epub, you must ensure that the following features are present in your ebook.

1. Simple Formatting: Avoid complexity in any form. Keep your Formatting or design simple. Simplicity in ebook publications covers style, fonts, and overall formatting.

2. Reflowability: Reflowability in your epub makes it appear fine on any screen size.
To achieve this, you must get rid of all unecesaary gaps, spaces, indents or paragraphs inorder to present a clean manuscript.

3. Easy Walk-thru: Ensuring an easy walk-thru for the readers of your ebook not only gives them an easy access into the book, but it also gives them a fulfilling experience while reading.

Unlike the prints books that have page numbers through which readers can navigate, ebooks don't have page numbers; hence the need for navigation pane and other tools to enhance readerbility.

Having this feature in your ebook helps your readers to easily move around in your epub, from Table of Contents straight to a particular chapter and vise versa.

This gives your readers a feel of the page numbering in the print book while reading.

4. Few Images: Use images sparingly. Too many images could be a thorn in the flesh of your ebook.

Only use images if they are very essential; they shouldn't be of high resolution.

In all, don't try to make your ebook look like an exact copy of a print version, they are not the same. Hence you must eliminate anything that could indicate this or bring about any form of confusion.

Note that good formatting is one of the major secrets to the success of ebooks.
