Microsoft Teams has become an essential product for companies, especially now during the health crisis, but Microsoft doesn’t want to lose consumers either, so today it’s announcing a brand-new version of its service.

Still called Microsoft Teams, this new version is specifically aimed at consumers, or home users, and it is supposed to allow them to connect with friends and family.

While at first it might seem to be just another chat app, Microsoft says the whole idea of Microsoft Teams for home users is to actually help them with things like coordinating, communicating, and working together on personal projects.

Some of Microsoft’s examples include planning a vacation or working together on a to-do list. You can even create and share grocery lists in your family group.
The essential feature package

This new Microsoft Teams comes with the basic feature package, so no, it’s not as powerful as the one aimed at companies. You still get text, chat, and video calling, support for groups, list, documents, and calendar sharing, Microsoft 365 integration, and location sharing.

Furthermore, the app comes with a so-called Safe that allows the sharing of sensitive information.

“Teams also comes with a Safe, which lets you securely store and share important information, like passwords, rewards numbers, or login information. You can easily share right from the Teams app so your whole family has easy access to the home Wi-Fi password or your streaming service login, all backed by the security of two-factor authentication and end-to-end encryption,” Microsoft explains.

The app is available in preview today on Android and iOS, and all you need is a Microsoft account. If you already configured Teams with your work account, just configure the personal one and then switch between them from within the app. Desktop clients are projected to launch later this year.
