In 1997, Forever by Amaka Igwe was released and without selling a single DVD or VHS, it became arguable one of the highest grossing Nollywood films ever made. How did Amaka Igwe achieve this feat without going to the marketers who had taken over sales and distribution of home movies? How did she make millions from a single movie without DVD release? She had a very good product and she was strategic from writing to finished work.

Forever featured Justus Esiri, Hilda Dokubo, Larry Williams and Ohi Alegbe who used to act in the sitcom Basi and company. At the time of shooting Forever, Amaka Igwe was still basking in the success of Checkmate as a popular television series. She had a name loved by almost everyone who watched television and with it she was able to access the then first lady Maryam Abacha with her film. The quality of the film and interesting story made it possible for the film to be used as to push the family support program of Maryam Abacha.

Amaka had taken a step into the unknown by shooting a high budget movie that shared the same vision as the Maryam Abacha's family support program. She was not sure whether it would be accepted by the first lady when she set off but she hoped against hope.

Forever won the heart and support of the first lady and Amaka Igwe's Moving Movies toured several states of Nigeria premiering the movie, making millions and winning awards. The cast's delivery and Amaka's gift as a director for reinventing actors was excellent. Justus Esiri did and excellent job in this movie and this may also be one of the highlights of his career. Or is it Hilda Dokubo who played the role of Uloma the irritating step mum.

If you have not seen this movie, it is a classic well worth your time. Amaka was the owner of Moving movies until her death and she was responsible for discovering greats like Richard Mofe Damijo(Segun Kadiri), Bob Manuel, Kunle Bamtefa (Chief Fuji), Stella Damascus, Ego Boyo to name a few. Rest in peace to the legends who have passed in the movie.
