The Commissioners of Education in 19 Northern States have supported the suspension of school reopening amid the pandemic by the Federal Government.

The commissioners made this known in a communique issued in Kaduna State on Saturday, after a virtual meeting to consider school reopening and other issues to strengthen the education sector.

The communique was signed by the Commissioner of Education, Kaduna, Dr Shehu Makarfi, who is also the Chairman of the Northern States School Exchange Programme.

Bauchi, Gombe, Niger, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Kogi, Kwara, Katsina, Kano, Borno and Jigawa.

The commissioners applauded the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, for taking a decisive stand against school reopening and pledged their full support.

According to them, keeping schools closed considering the spike in cases of COVID-19 across the country is a sure step in ensuring that children remain safe.

“We have, therefore, resolved that schools should be reopened only when it is safe to do so and when states have complied with the minimum COVID-19 safety protocols as outlined by the NCDC.

“We will also participate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination and other examinations only when it is safe to reopen schools and when coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education,” they said.

The commissioners also resolved to carry out a holistic assessment of schools to determine safety status for reopening and submit reports to their respective governors for consideration.

“Schools’ infrastructure, such as dilapidated classrooms, students’ hostels, source of safe water, sanitary facilities, including hand washing equipment and security are critical and should be improved.

“We will equally clear schools of bushes and grasses, as well as fumigate school’s surroundings to support learning and ensure safety when schools resume,” they said.

They, however, appealed to the Federal Government to support states in putting safety measures in place for school reopening.

Just imagine those deciding the present educational predicament of all of Nigeria; the uneducated North.

Ministry of Education should never be under the leadership of a Northerner. After all they are not usually education-inclined. As a matter of fact, their best leader Buhari doesn't even have WAEC certificate so it's understandable why they want 2020 WAEC examination scrapped, while they noisly beat election drums in Edo and Ondo states.

I sense inferiority syndrome on the part of the accountant that we have as a minister for education.

that's why the North are backing their very own.
shame on them because everything is not all about politics.

ADAMU feels belittled when the state minister for education gave the briefing on resumption of certificate classes.

Northerners don't like education. It is not in their blood. Their strength is in agriculture and so I wonder what adamu adamu is doing in the ministry of Education.

Looking at the scenario at a logical point, this is what played out.

Mr Adamu believes he should have been briefed by his subordinate i.e the minister of state about the outcome of the resolutions with the stakeholders before making the announcement that Waec will commence on the 4th of Aug.

To him, the announcement should have come directly from his mouth. He felt his "ego" was bruised, hence he needs to act so that Nigerians will know that he's in charge.

He uttered the cancellation statement based on emotional outburst garnish with mild arrogance and pride.

In his words " who is WAEC to decide when we should reopened our schools"

I trust Nigerians, once the minister receives backlashes from left, right and center, he will swallow his pride and says he was quoted out of context.

The fact is that,,,,,

No one is ready to take the blame of the after-effect.

Govt would always be cautious when it comes to young lives.

The present govt also took the advantage of Bring Back Our Girls/Chibok girls/Boko Haram protest to gain power.

There are some opposition parties awaiting costly mistakes they could ride on.

Politics is a dirty game.

I think southern governors should examine the situation critically and come up with their own agenda. It may or may not align with what the northern states want.

In fact, only 16 states have a decision to make. Oyo state had already made a decision.
