Federal Government (FG) has said that oweing to the increasing rate of Covid-19 in the country, that they will not reopen schools as it is not yet safe for academic activities to resume in schools across the country.

Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, the Minister of state for education, who made this known while addressing journalists at the end of the eighth virtual federal executive council meeting, on Wednesday (yesterday), said that despite the recent pressure by the House of Representatives on School Resumption, in order to enable students participate in the 2020 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), academic institutions would remain closed till adequate safety is assured.

It can be recalled, that the Federal Government had ordered the closure of schools since March to present further spread of coronavirus and to ensure the safety of all citizens in the country.

The minister said that WAEC is into a negotiation with other West African countries to look at possible shifts in date for the 2020 WASSCE. He said once they are through with that meeting and hopefully when we are also through with the consultations, any change in the ministry’s position, will be updated

According to Nwajiuba, the FG are still meeting with parents over the reopening of schools, and the safety of everyone was not yet assured, as the number of COVID-19 infections from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is still very alarming, which was presented to parents and all. He said the meeting is still ongoing with, and there is a stakeholder meeting which will hold next week Monday.

Nwajiuba added that after series of review which was carried out, the ministry discovered that it would be risky for schools to partially resume amid the rising number of coronavirus cases, as the safety of citizens are not assured
