The Kainji Dam as we know, is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State and the first dam project in Nigeria.

Construction of the dam was carried out by Impregilo (a consortium of Italian Civil Engineering Contractors) to designs by Joint Consultants, Balfour Beatty and Nedeco, and began in 1964 to be completed in 1968.

The total cost was estimated at US$209 million which is equivalent to about US$1.4 billion today.

The dam was designed to have a generating capacity of 960 megawatts; however, only 8 of its 12 turbines have been installed, reducing the capacity to 760 megawatts.

The dam generates electricity for some large cities in Nigeria while some of the electricity is sold to neighbouring countries.

Below are some of the construction pictures I could get and some recent pictures as well.

Wonderful and educative piece. Thanks OP. The pics are breathtaking

But FG should at least help install the additional 4 turbines so that we can have access to more power.

Can't believe we have not installed them after all thes.e years

The Dadin Kowa Dam in Gombe state have been completed since 1984, all civilian governments since Obasanjo, GEJ and now Buhari have allocated billions of naira to install turbines but nothing has been done.

Its hard to believe that a dam completed in 1984 haven't generated at least a megawatt of power in 2020

Interesting.

I heard the dam is still operating below capacity. One way to increase power generation is to get all power stations operating at their maximum capacities

only 8 out of the 12 are functional.

Maybe we should just tryout nuclear energy as another option for generating electricity
