The Chelsea statistic that should worry Frank Lampard before must-not-lose Wolves game
Three at the back did not work at Anfield but is the record more than coincidence?


On five occasions this season Frank Lampard has introduced a back three to considerable success but the four times Chelsea stuck with the formation for the following game they have been defeated.

Against Wolves away, Lille at home, Tottenham twice and Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final, Chelsea have switched defensive shape and won but the following game in all but one ended in a loss.

Is that coincidence or something more? The evidence suggests the latter, the lack of continuity a significant contributing factor to an issue that has plagued the West London side for much of the season.


Entering the final game of the season, the head coach is still not certain over the best personnel or formation for a defence with a record more fitting of a team in the bottom half than trying to seal Champions League qualification.
