Do So Much More With Your Final Year Project!! by Scriptify247: 12:07am On Aug 14, 2020
As a graduate from Obafemi Awolowo University, it was a prerequisite in my department to write two project works. One in part 4, for a professional exams and the other as a final year student. Surprising right!…same here until l got entangled with it!. But that’s not the reason for this write up, read till the end to know the aftermath of these two projects!

Every year, students in all fields from tertiary institutions in Nigeria engages in a compulsory final year project work in a bid to unravel new findings as regards a specific phenomenon.

This body of work not only deepens and cement the knowledge of the student in such field, but equally serves as means of contributing to the body of knowledge through publication in relevant journals for other researchers to consume.

However, a common ground known to everyone is that a significant number of graduates doesn’t get their work published or shared due to plethora of reasons but having said that, these occurrence raised significant concerns of:

✅ Out of thousands of undergraduates researches conducted yearly, approximately less than 1% are published.

✅ The remaining 99% are stored manually in departmental libraries making it unavailable for students (who perhaps is conducting a similar study) outside such institutions.

✅ Depreciating research work database.

✅ Limited sharing of knowledge of works done in Nigeria despite the huge researches conducted each year.

✅Almost all tertiary institutions in Nigeria lacks electronic library.

Back to my initial story of my two projects…. Ooh wait!, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten!!.. that was on a lighter note though. To sum things up, l defended the two projects, was graded and as usual, dumped them somewhere because it wasn’t published. Till date, l don’t know the where about of the first project, while the second project is kept inside wardrobe (with no significant use for it apart from the grade and records). This cycle reflects what happens to majority of the projects written by undergraduates in tertiary institutions, despite all the inputs (in terms of stress and financial costs).

Projects are meant to be disseminated, making them available to be referenced in future related studies.

Should this trend continue? NO
