A teacher is a person who has been trained to impart the knowledge, skills and values he/she has acquired through training to learners.

What are the qualities of a good teacher? A good teacher should have the following qualities:

1. Be empathetic: a good teacher should be able to imagine what the learners might be thinking or how they feel. He/she should be able to sense the emotions of the learners. This would help to understand learners preparedness for the topic. And guide the teacher in choosing appropriate teaching method.

2. Be kind: kindness is an important character of anyone who wishes to become a teacher. A good teacher should be friendly with the learners, generous and considerate. This would endear the learners to him/her and make them more receptive to learn.

3. Be a good listener. A good teacher should encourage learners to express themselves. And also be interested to hear from them. Do not be autocratic.

4. Confidence in leadership. A good teacher should be confident and able to show good leadership by example.

5. Ability to manage the classroom. The classroom can either be a war front or a fertile ground to cultivate great minds. All depends on the teacher's ability to manage them.

6. Neatness. Oh yes, a good teacher should be neat and smartly dressed always.

7. Subject mastery. A good teacher should have a mastery of the subject he/she teaches. And this involves a lot of research, planning and practise.

8. Sociable. A good teacher should be able to interact with the learners, their parents, his colleagues and other stake holders effectively.

11. Be willing to keep daily records of activities in case of enquires.

12. Be dynamic and willing to try new ideas.



Teaching principles explain educational processes. They show how things are done to achieve desired educational results.

Here are some Teaching principles a teacher should practice:

1. Teach from known to unknown.

2. Teaching from simple to complex.

3. Teaching from part to whole.

4. Teaching from particular to general.

5. Encourage learners participation through interactive sessions.

6. Teaching learners with consideration for their individual differences.

7. Giving regular feedback on teaching outcomes.

8. Attach time to academic activities.

9. Introduce reward as a positive reinforcement.

10. Plan remedial classes for students with special needs.
