Greetings to you all.

Many a time, I have closely observed even in our local movies, whenever Police is to arrest a suspect, n utterance like this gushes out: "Shut up, any thing you say will be used against you in the Court of law"

I would like Criminologists and legal know how in the house to do justice to this.

How truthful it is?

What are it's efficacy?

Thank you.

While there is no special interpretation of the aforementioned statement rather it's meant to be statement of caution and a reminder of your fundamental right.
As a suspect in criminal case, you have the right to speak and the investigating Police Officer (IPO) has the right to use whatever information contained in your speech as evidence against you in the court of law. However, the Nigeria Criminal Procedure make provision for the law enforcement agents to duly remind and inform suspects their statement be used as evidence against them. Unless this protocol is observed, whatever evidence extracted is not legally admissible in the law court. This primarily to avoid forceful extraction of evidence.
Suspect can voluntarily explain their position in respect to the case but must be reminded that information contains in their statement can as well be used as evidence against them.
Although, we most times used it in an intimidating Manner but that doesn't invalid the fact that you were duly informed of your right.

Just for the suspect to be cautious of his acts since the law has stepped in formally. It's standard all over the world, to ensure human right and personal dignity
