Chelsea delivered the goods last night in Copenhagen, a Nicolas Anelka double instilled confidence back into the side as Carlo Ancelotti breathed a sigh of relief. It was Chelsea’s first win in three weeks as they took a stranglehold on the tie going into the second leg. The next game will be held at Stamford Bridge and the Chelsea faithful will be confident that the win is guaranteed.

Fernando Torres again replaced Didier Drogba but still failed to score his first goal for the Blues. Fans will be wondering whether they have bought a ‘white elephant’ (we all remember the Shevchenko years) or a middle aged ‘Porsche’ that just needs a bit of maintenance before it is back to its best on the road! Copenhagen looked rusty and Chelsea could have scored more than two, Anelka put them 1-0 up on the 17th minute after he ran onto a poor pass from ex-Chelsea player Jesper Gronkjaer to place the ball under keeper Johan Wiland. Then on the 54th minute he placed a tidy finish into the net from a classy Frank Lampard pass. Some credit must be given to Torres who had several shots saved and cleared from the target, he was however the only Chelsea player to pick up a yellow card on the night.

Ancelotti said ‘It was a good result, a good performance. We were focused for this game and prepared well’. Tottenham dropped points against Blackpool last night losing 3-1 so this will only appease the Chelsea boss who will look to spur on his troops to win the big three points against Manchester United at home on Tuesday. After an FA Cup exit last week and their hopes of retaining the Premier League title all but gone, a positive result was crucial to Ancelotti’s side in Copenhagen.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid drew with Lyon thanks to a Bafetimbi Gomis equaliser. The 25 year old Lyon striker cancelled out substitute Benzema’s goal on 83 minutes. Benzema was brought on for Adebayor and immediately scored, after some great work on the edge of the box by Ozil and Ronaldo. But a late Lyon free-kick was deflected up into air and Cris climbed highest to head the ball into the path of the unmarked Gomis, who volleyed past Casillas to earn his side a draw.
