The 27-year-old Austrian claimed his first career Grand Slam title with a five-set victory over Alexander Zverev

It was a deeply unusual tournament, with fans prohibited, players restricted to a bubble, and a No. 1 seed exiled for an on-court incident, but in the end, the pandemic-edition U.S. Open delivered something fresh:

A new men’s champion.

On Sunday, Dominic Thiem defeated Alexander Zverev, 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6), to capture the Open’s men’s singles title in New York City.

It is the first major tournament title of Thiem’s career. In an era still dominated by the historic tennis troika of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, the 27-year-old from Austria is the first men’s player to breakthrough with his first major victory since Marin Cilic prevailed here in 2014.

Neither Federer, recuperating for an injury, nor Nadal, who chose to stay in Europe to prepare for the delayed French Open, played this year’s tournament. The top-seeded Djokovic was disqualified from the event in the fourth round after an incident in which a ball he hit in frustration struck a line judge.

For Thiem, it was an opportunity. The tournament’s second seed, he had reached three major finals prior to this one, and thoroughly established himself as one of the world’s top men’s players. But until now, a victory had eluded him.

Just try to learn the rules and you would love the game.

The guy was just lucky....Zverev came with a game plan, which was service....he served so well in the first and second sets that Thiem couldn't cope, can't return shit..lol.

However, at the end of second set, it was glaring the energy was no longer there for that important first service...and the Thiem being a superb returner, made sure he paid for any second service with his master ground strokes and back hand slices ....

Anyway, congratulations to Thiem, after 3attempts...Well deserved..
