Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round tie at Aston Villa looks set to be an enthralling encounter with the visitors out for revenge after their remarkable 7-2 defeat at Villa Park in October.

Jurgen Klopp’s team lead the Premier League despite taking just two points from their last three matches, while Villa are eighth, but neither club has a good recent record in this competition.

In five seasons under Klopp has been poor, Liverpool have gone out at this stage of the competition once and in the fourth round three times. Last season they reached the fifth round, in which they were beaten by Chelsea. Villa, meanwhile, have gone out in the third round in each of the past four seasons, beaten by Spurs, Peterborough United, Swansea City and Fulham.

But whereas Villa’s return of 11 points in that time represents a significant improvement in form, the nine that Liverpool have picked up is notably poorer than last season, when they swept all before them. Villa have conceded fewer goals than any team except Manchester City, while Liverpool have struggled away from home, and Dean Smith’s men will fancy their chances of claiming their scalp for a second time this season.
