DEPRESSION����

INTRODUCTION
With the recent happenings in Nigeria, and the world at large, a lot of persons are going into depression, the number of persons keep increasing with each passing day when compared with what we used to have. Depression does not only affect the old, young people can also be depressed.
Families, friends and religious community have a big role to play. We should not always assume that" all is well" with someone we know, we should always make an effort to call and ask our family members, our friends and church members how they are fairing, with that we will be able to detect who is going into depression and help the person before it goes " out of hand."(sweetmotherhood)

POINTS TO NOTE

- Do not take any suicide threat from someone you know as a joke.

- When a person's attitude changes from being lively to being moody, ask to Know what happened.

- When family member or friend keep locking his or her self in the room, find out what is going on.

- when there's a change in behavior, when he or she does not communicate with you as usual, do not assume the person is forming big boy/girl ask why.

- When your spouse, children or friends suddenly starts keeping late night, do not start nagging, try to find out what is going on, they may be going to the bar to "drink away their sorrow."

- When someone voices out, that he/she is depressed, please reach out.(sweetmotherhood)

DEFINITION

Depression is a mood disorder that involves a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Major life events, such as bereavement or loss of job can lead to depression.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

- A depressed mood
- loss of sexual desire
- Reduced interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
- Unintentional weight loss or gain
- changes in appetite
- sleeping too much or too little
-Agitation, restlessness and pacing up and down
- slowed movement and speech
- fatigue or loss of energy
- feeling of worthless or guilt
- Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decision
- Recurrent thought of death or suicide or an attempt at suicide.

CAUSES

The medical community does not fully understand the cause of depression. There are many possible causes and sometimes various factor combine to trigger symptoms.
Factors that are likely to play a role includes;
- Genetic features
- Changes in the neurotransmitters level.
- Environmental factors
Psychological and social factors
- Additional conditions such as bipolar disorder

TYPES OF DEPRESSION

(1) Major depression: A person with major depression experiences a constant state of sadness. They may lose interest in activities that they used to enjoy.

(2) persistent depressive disorder: Also known as dysthymia, this disorder causes symptoms that last at least 2 years. A person with this disorder may have episodes of major depression as well as mild symptoms.

(3) Psychotic depression: some people experience psychosis with depression. Psychosis can involve delusion such as false belief and detachment from reality. It can also involve hallucinations; sensing things that do not exist.

(4)Post- partum depression: After giving birth, many women experience what some people call the "baby blues" when hormone levels readjust after birth, changes in mood can result.
N/B: Anyone who experiences ongoing depression after delivery should seek medical attention.

TREATMENT

- SUPPORT: This can range from discussing practical solutions and possible causes to educating family members.

- PSYCHOTHERAPY: Also known as talking therapy, some options includes; one on one counseling and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)

- DRUG TREATMENT: A doctor may prescribe, antidepressants

- FOOD AND DIET: Result of a 2019 study suggest that eating more of the following foods helped reduce depression symptoms ( fruits, vegetables,fish and olive oil)

- EXERCISE: Aerobic exercise raises endorphin levels and stimulate the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, which is linked with mood. This may help relieve mild depression.

- BRAIN STIMULATION THERAPIES: These are another treatment options. For example repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation sends magnetic impulses to the brain, and this may help treat major depression.

CONCLUSION

People experience depression in different ways. It may interfere with your daily work resulting in lost of time and lower productivity. It can also influence relationships and some chronic health conditions.
Early detection and prompt treatment is usually the best way to manage depression. We know many life situations can lead to depression, but that is not the " end if the road" talk to someone today if you are depressed and get help. We do not want to lose you.�
