NIGERIA's attempt to replace injured first choice goalkeeper, Moses Ocheje, who has been knocked out of the competition by injury, has been rebuffed by world football governing body, FIFA.

Ocheje was knocked out of the tourney when central defender Suraj Sodiq crashed into him during Nigeria's first game against Costa Rica at the Royal Athletic Park in Victoria City, and needed to be revived before being taken to hospital.

NFA's Media Officer, Ademola Olajire, who spoke with The Guardian from Canada, said NFA scribe, Bolaji Ojo-Oba had written to FIFA General Secretary through the General Co-ordinator, Victoria Centre, that Nigeria needed to "bring in another goalkeeper, considering that we have a maximum of six matches left in the tournament."

Replying, FIFA said that "a player listed on the official list of players may be replaced only in the event of a serious injury up to 24 hours before the kick-off of the team's first match."

Meanwhile, anybody who feels that the Flying Eagles will take it easy against Japan in today's match because they have already qualified for the second round of the competition, may be in for a big surprise because team captain, Nduka Ozokwor, has declared that the team would play to beat the Asians and get the winning bonus.

Ozokwor said that the absence of suspended defender, Ambrose Efe and injured goalkeeper, Moses Ocheje won't stop the Flying Eagles because "we need the full match bonus."

He added:"Apart from wanting to win and stay here in Victoria, we also need the money. Victoria is somewhere we are getting used to gradually and we now have a large fan base here.

"So, it will be better for us to remain here for the Round of 16, and only a win against Japan can guarantee that."

A draw will not do because Japan are presently at the top courtesy of their higher number of goals, even as both teams are tied on goals difference of plus three.

The players were each paid $750 for the win over Scotland, the same amount they got for beating Costa Rica on Sunday. They will get another $750 each if they beat Japan, and will earn $1,000 each if they win the round of 16 match.

Why is Captain Ozokwor warming the bench? If he is not hurt, it's weird for a captain to be featured as a replacement.
Re: Japan Vs Nigeria by 9ja4eva: 4:49am On Jul 07, 2007
I still cannot figure out why.Maybe he is nt fully fit.
Re: Japan Vs Nigeria by abbgstar(m): 8:05am On Jul 07, 2007
We will be meeting either Czech or Spain/Uruguay. I think its better for us to play a draw with Japan or even outrightly lose the match on purpose so that we can play either of Spain or Uruguay. I hope Nigeria plays a smart one on the Japanese this time around. I personally think the Czech team is stronger than our team presently.
