Toxicity is System of a Down's second studio album, released on September 4, 2001, by American Recordings and Columbia Records. It has the heaviness and violence of their self-titled debut from 1998, but it still has more rhythm, harmonies, and singing than the band's previous release.

Toxicity is mainly classified as alternative metal and nu metal, but it also incorporates elements of pop, indie rock, jazz, Armenian music, and Greek music, as well as the use of instruments such as the sitar, banjo, keyboards, and piano.

It covers a wide range of political and non-political topics, from mass imprisonment, the CIA, the economy, police brutality, drug use, and groupies, to name a few.

During the recording of Toxicity, System of a Down recorded over thirty tracks, but only fourteen ended up on the soundtrack.

Several of the songs recorded for Toxicity were re-recorded for System of a Down's next studio album, Steal This Album!, which was released in 2002.

Toxicity was recorded in Hollywood, California at Cello Studios, mixed in Burbank, California at Enterprise Studios, and mastered in Studio City, California at Oasis Mastering.
