In response to the Presidential Task Force on the COVID-19 flight ban, Emirates has suspended flight to and from Nigeria. In a statement made available to the public, the airline confirmed that the suspension will start from March 18, 2021, until further notice.

In line with government directives, passenger flights to and from Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) are suspended with effect from 18 March 2021 until further notice.

Customers travelling to and from Lagos and Abuja will not be accepted for travel.

We regret the inconvenience caused, and affected customers should contact their booking agent or Emirates call centre for rebooking. Emirates remains committed to Nigeria, and we look forward to resuming passenger services when conditions allow.

Recall that, the UAE had recently suspended passenger services from Nigeria until March 21 2021.

“Customers from both Abuja and Lagos will not be accepted for travel prior to or including this date. Passengers who have been to or connected through Nigeria in the last 14 days are not allowed entry into the UAE (whether terminating in or connecting through Dubai).”

While noting that Emirates flights from Dubai to Lagos and Abuja will continue as scheduled, the statement, however, restated the commitment of UAE to resume passenger services to Dubai when conditions allow.

Nigeria Government asked emirates to suspend both inbound and outbound flights from midnight on Wednesday when they refused to accept the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 recommendation.

Sirika said: “We gave the two airlines options of either have a PCR test 72 hours before departure or within 72 hours before departure and repeat the PCR test on arrival or have a rapid test before departure and have PCR on arrival but not the combination of the three because it doesn’t make scientific sense.

“Emirate didn’t accept the position and so, we have asked that Emirate be banned from operations midnight Wednesday and that has been communicated with them since Sunday but like the PTF chairman has said, if they come back to us to resume as KLM has done, they will be allowed, otherwise, the status quo remains and they would be banned from an inbound and outbound flight.

That's the problem with having much patronage. They feel leaving us out won't change a thing in their purse.

But are other airlines not going to Dubai? And is it just Emirates airline or is it the UAE that ban flights to Nigeria?

The way they keep suspending business activities because of the virus, at times I usually feel it's to just obey protocol.
