BAUCHI State is still reeling from the three-day madness of this week when rioters unleashed mayhem on fellow citizens after the result of last weekend’s presidential election showed that incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan had secured an emphatic victory over his challengers.
When the state Police Commissioner in charge of elections in the state, Amama John Abakasanga, took stock of the carnage yesterday, the toll proved heavy and heart-rending.
He confirmed that at least 11 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were brutally killed, while an unspecified number of the female corps members were serially violated, molested and assaulted by irate youths in the Gadau village of the state.
The Ekiti and Osun state governments have evacuated many of corps members from the states who are currently serving in the North.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Joseph Hayab, has decried what he said were attempts by foreign media to accuse Christians of perpetrating the violence that he said were clearly targeted at Christians both North and South.
Rev. Hayab confirmed that one Rev. Namaska Annabi of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) was killed during the riots in Kaduna state and wondered why foreign media would report that the mayhem was unleashed by Christians on Muslims when it was, in fact the other way round.
