Next to the FIFA World cup, the EUFA Champions League is considered the second most prestigious and coveted trophy, a lifelong dream of many a footballer. The annual final game of the tournament, according to official estimates, attracts no less than 350 million live viewers worldwide!
Heroes and villains are made on such Saturday nights.
The 2020/21 season which had given football fans the chance to watch an all-English final in Porto, Portugal, has just ended with Chelsea triumphant over Manchester City. The match had once again proved the tireless Chelsea Afro-French player Ngolo Kante as a world class influential defensive midfielder who frustrated Manchester City's search for goals for the whole 90 minutes.
Attaining global fame within a span of just half a decade, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the World Cup, the Europa Cup and now the Champion League in a row is enough to temper with the humility botton of an average guy. But not so is the case with the ever smiling Kante. Though insanely rich like your typical football star of his pedigree, yet he always remembers his humble roots and, therefore, sees no reason to be high-headed. I think there's no living football legend who is overwhelmingly adored by both fans and neutrals like him. If you need an evidence, simply refer to the outpour of praises showered on him even before the final whistle last night. He simply had to be the deserving Man of the Match.
I remember in 2018 when the members of a local Mosque in London were surprised and overjoyed when he stopped by, prayed and had a meal with them before leaving in his Scooper.
As Madam Ella Wheeler Wilcox said over a 100 years back, ''laugh and the world laughs with you; weep, and you weep alone." At the moment, we laugh with Kante.
