Pls help. I had a bsc petroleum engr about 5yrs ago, did my nysc at a depot. But since i left sch. I have only secured a job in marketing and then banking. I want to do my msc in either geophysics or process engr, am also scared of going too narrow if u get wat i mean. Am out of job now. What wil u advise and why?

@OP,
I'm not sure how geophysics is the right direction, since you already studied petroleum engineering.
Why not process engineering?
Re: Pls Help, Msc Process Engr Or Geophysics by Nobody: 4:02pm On May 04, 2011
Was thinking along that line, my decision to do geophysics is to specialise n d event of any opening, but at d same time am being cautious not to get 2 'trapped'. Dont know much about process engineering but i think it cuts across all engr field, but no depth. Any more opinion from anyone pls?

Wouldn't an Msc in Petroleum Engineering be the the most appropriate? I know it will be difficult for you to consider my suggestion, given that your bachelors degree in PetEng has not yet yielded any fruit by way of a job.

You have a Bsc in PetEng, experience in Banking and then marketing. My view is that attempting a further "career switch" to  ProcessEng or Geophysics might potray you as being indecisive or unsure of what you want career wise, in the eyes of prospective employers.

Granted, there is some common ground between PetEng and ProcessEng, but I would argue that this is limited (e.g. fundamental understanding of phase behaviour). I therefore do not see an Msc in Process Engineering as a logical next step after a BEng in Petroleum Engineering.

An arguement in favour of the Geophysics option is that it is a core sub-surface discipline (like petroleum engineering) and as a practising Geophysicists there will be frequent instances where Petroleum Engineering knowledge helps you do your job (or helps you to help your colleague). Prospects in Geophysics increasingly depend on where you study. Are you intending to do your Msc abroad?

Bear in mind that many other folks in your shoes will be thinking along the same lines of not wanting to get "trapped" and will therefore be rushing to Process Engineering.

Regarding jobs, do you think you have a better chance competing with the many other Msc Chemical Eng / Msc Process Engineering degree holders (who probably have a BEng in Chemical Engineering) versus competing with a relatively smaller group of Geophysicist?

Left to me, I would suggest, in order of preferences:

a) Msc in Petroleum Engineering
b) Msc in Petroleum Geophysics

All the best.

X!

@x2x, thanks. I intend doin my msc in naija, cant afford abroad 4 now. For d process engr, i imagined dat i should be able to apply 4 jobs at least n closely related industry to oil and gas,and also marketable. U undastand my concern, i appreciate, but if i go d way of msc geophysics witout experience, d extent of d risk could be much wen compared to d former. As per competition, i tink i my 1st deg should giv me some sort of leverage, so i tink. Anymore opinions?

@  valacious,

your query is very typical of most petroleum engineering graduates who have found themselves in the banking system which is no fault of theirs, but if i should add my 2 cents, going for a degree in geology or geophysics now will really limit your options,

However going for a masters degree in Pet Eng in the States or Canada is not a bad idea but its quite cost intensive.

But, u can try other countries like Europe, they are schools that have free education, Germany, Netherlands, Norway ,turkey,to name a few and the quality is just as the same with the states or Canada.

As some one  pointed out here u really need to do a research in what you want in you career, from your post it seems you are trying to take whatever course you feel is the in road to the oil and gas company, just to let you know u can get into the oil and gas industry as a Driver !,  but u need a strategy.

i will just give u some few tips
there is SAIT in Canada(ALBERTA)  their petroleum engineering courses are one the best globally
also there is NAIT too there fees would be btw the ranges of 15,000 to 20,000 Canadian dollars and u get to work while schooling too,

there is one university in Nova Scotia too, fairly cheap but they require Toefl .
u can browse for universities offering petroleum engineering at masters level in Germany , Bulgaria, Egypt, turkey, which are affordable besides as a petroleum engineering graduate u can work in the oil and gas industry as a completions man, well planner, well intervention specialist, driller, assistant driller, waste management specialist, well tester, reservoir engineer, rig supervisor even as a drilling representative , the opportunities are endless,

just sit down and do a qualitative research in what you want out of your career, go to career websites of oil companies and check out what skills are needed in most positions it will give u an overview of what u might need to start off, u can also join some professional online forum related to the oil and gas, i am sure u will get some helpful tips from experienced professional there

Do not give up, Good luck

yeah, you did, and I did respond on this thread.

Am a chemical engineering student presently in year 4 .pls i rili want to know d major differences between process engineers and petroluem engineer....there has been a serious issues with me and my colleagues in sch that most of the PE student feel more superior in everytin and they kip saying they are d arab moni and so many tins that make me pissed and am thinking of going into PE after school but my sister kip telling me that in d nearest future PE will be wipe out that most of d company will not be able to absorb them anymore as d crude may finish or other alternative will be found in place of d crude as technology advances.now am very much confused..experienced people shud pls comment as i dont mean theoretical differences cos am already grounded in that.tanx
