THUNDER & FRIGHTENING: LIGHTNING has destroyed homes as thunderstorms and floods batter Britain today.

A pensioner fled in terror after a lightning bolt caused two homes to explode into flames overnight.

Storm warnings are in force across England and Wales today as 19 million drivers hit the road for weekend getaways.

A yellow thunderstorm warning has been extended from 5am until midnight tomorrow night and covers nearly the entire breadth of southern England.

It brings the week-long blistering heatwave to a dramatic end after record-breaking 32C temperatures.

Dramatic photos showed two homes on fire after being hit by a lightning bolt during storms in Hampshire.

Two houses were engulfed in flames as a lightning bolt struck the semi-detached homes causing them to go on fire.

A 70-year-old resident was assessed by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment, according to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"There was this enormous bang, it was obviously the lightning, I think it woke the rest of the street up," neighbour Barrie Austen said.

"I saw the flickering and when I looked out I saw the roof of the semi-detached house completely ablaze and it had completely gone.

"The side that supports the roof, that collapsed as well and then the flames spread into next door."

He said that two sisters live at the property and one was checked over by ambulance crews.

He added: "She seemed shaken but seemed OK, no real physical problems. I think the lightning hit the roof, woke them up and they just got out."

Elsewhere, roads were flooded in New Romney, Kent, where a car was left stranded in the middle of the road.

11 flood alerts are in place for southern England and will be in place until Sunday morning.

The thunderstorm warning is in place all weekend as the Met Office said homes and businesses could be flooded with power cuts a high possibility.

On Thursday a fallen tree forced train passengers to leave a tram and walk for 30 minutes along the tracks in heavy rain and lightning storms.

Extreme weather led to a tree falling on the tracks between Prestwich and Heaton Park in Greater Manchester, reports MEN.

Flood warnings have been issued as thunderstorms will end the UK's scorching 32C heatwave just as 11.5m drivers hit the roads this weekend.

The Met Office has warned of "tricky travelling conditions" as 55mph winds will batter coastal areas.
