Imagine if the brake pedal was as small as the gas pedal, and during emergency braking, (stamping on the brake pedal) you missed it? Or worse, stamped on the gas pedal instead (because it was massive)? I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions! |

The handbrake isn't for emergency braking. The handbrake is to prevent a car rolling down a slope / gradient, when the vehicle is parked, or if in stationary traffic. An average family sedan weighing over 1,300 kgs, developing in excess of 160 bhp is unlikely to be halted from lets say, 65 mph just by yanking on the handbrake!  It's also dangerous, the car would most likely go into an uncontrolled spin, as the handbrake acts on two wheels only (generally the rears). |
