TEGINA, Nigeria, Aug 24 (Reuters) - After armed men snatched seven of Abubakar Adam's 11 children in northwestern Nigeria, he sold his car and a parcel of land and cleaned out his savings to raise a ransom to free them.

He sent his 3 million naira ($7,300) into the bush, together with payments from other families in his town of Tegina. The kidnappers took the money, seized one of the men delivering it and sent back a new demand for more cash and six motorbikes.

"We are in agony," the 40-year-old tyre repairman told Reuters, still waiting for any sign of what happened to his children three months after the mass abduction. "Honestly I don't have anything left."

Kidnappers have taken more than 1,000 students since December amid a rash of abductions across the impoverished northwest. Around 300 of the children have still not been returned, according to a Reuters tally of reports.

President Muhammadu Buhari has told states not to pay anything to kidnappers, saying it will only encourage more abductions. read more Security agencies say they are targeting the bandits with military action and other methods.

Meanwhile, hundreds of parents are facing the same quandary: do everything they can to raise the ransoms themselves, or risk never seeing their children again.

"We are begging the government to help," said Aminu Salisu, whose eight-year-old son was taken in the same daylight raid on Tegina's Salihu Tanko Islamic school in May, alongside more than 130 students. read more

Salisu cleared out his own savings and sold everything in his shop to raise his contribution. The owner of the school sold off half the grounds. Together, with the help of friends, relatives and strangers, the people of Tegina said they raised 30 million naira.

But that still wasn't enough for the bandits.

Kidnappers collected more than $18 million in ransom from June 2011 to March 2020 in Nigeria, according to an estimate by Lagos-based analysts SBM Intelligence.

That flood of cash brought a flood of new kidnappers, said Bulama Bukarti, an analyst in the Extremism Policy Unit of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. He estimated there were currently around 30,000 bandits operating in the northwest.

"It's the most thriving, the most lucrative industry in Nigeria," he told Reuters. Kidnapping has become a tempting career choice for young men at a time of economic slump, double-digit inflation and 33% unemployment.

"From December, we saw the Pandora's box open. They saw it was possible. They saw that nothing happened to the attackers," Bukarti said.

In December, gunmen kidnapped 344 boys from the Government Science Secondary School in the northwestern state of Katsina during a night-time raid. The kidnappers released the boys a week later, but it set off a spate of similar kidnappings across the region. read more

The bandits took a page from the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which seized more than 200 schoolgirls from the northeastern town of Chibok in 2014. That group had ideological aims and forced some of the girls to marry fighters.

What a country. Buhari came and made a you turn on all his promises. All we see today is directly opposite what he promised Nigerians. His state in Katsina isn't safe anymore. Their law makers were said to be crying at a plenary today, due to the spate of insecurity in the state.

What still remains appalling was the successful invasion of NDA in Kaduna by boko haram some hours ago, having a field day. NDA is Nigeria Defence Academy oo my people...a supposedly secured environment where people are expected to run to, for safety. Aso villa or national assembly could be next, the way things are going. It's just like saying alquaeda invaded west point in USA and killed soldiers-in-training.

I wonder how other Africans under us , including those we're keeping peace in their country would be thinking right now. Eleyii ga oo!

Its really very easy to catch this kidnappers

If they want the ransom in cash, simply buy tracking chips from alibaba and amazon and put on some of the cash and bags. And If they want transfer, simply arrest the executive management of the banks and tell them to provide the account details that received the ransom and put an alert out to all security and military personnel and tell the bankers to raise an alarm whenever anybody tries to access that account

Buhari government declared and proscribed IPOB as a terrorists group when they were still unarmed agitators

Buhari government sent the entire Federal might of Army, DSS, IRT and special forces to speak to UGM in a language they understand

Buhari government sent DSS to raid Igboho residence with shootings even though they are unarmed agitators

Buhari government tracked and captured Nnamdi Kanu in far away Kenya

Buhari government sent soldiers to shoot Lekki tollgate unarmed peaceful protesters against police brutality and oppression

Buhari government labels Boko Haram as terrorists

But surprisingly, despite that Fulani criminals that have been terrorising the length and breath of Nigeria, killing and kidnapping civilian children and adults, killing and kidnapping military personnel, even army colonels and generals, the Buhari government has refused to label them as terrorists but calls them bandits. They say they are doing business. Buhari government has refused to speak to them in the same language theybare speaking to Boko Haram and UGM. Buhari government knows their locations, but doesn't go after them or make attempt to rescue rhe victims. Buhari government leaves the parents and relatives of victims at the mercy of these Fulani criminals to pay huge ransoms that have run into billions of naira. Buhari government treats these Fulani criminals with kidgloves and ready to grant them amnesty despite their uncountable atrocities to the Nigerian population. Most of these Fulani criminals are not even Nigerians but imported criminals from across Africa.

Something is definitely wrong somewhere because it is very clear and obvious now that the Buhari government is aiding and abetting these Fulani criminals and chooses to call them bandits instead of the terrorists that they are. Buhari government is responsible for the explosion of the kidnapping industry into a mulitbillion naira criminal enterprise run by Fulani terrorists. I am fed up of the insincerity and double standard of this government. Buhari government is treating Fulani criminals like sacred cows that should not be touched.

This news is making me so angry right now. Look at what citizens are going through, selling all their possessions and sinking into abject penury just to save their loved ones because the Buhari government has totally failed in its primary duty of providing security for Nigerians. It has never been this bad in the history of this country.

Is it not desperation that makes one want to sell everything in order to pay off these illiterate vagabonds?
