Looking at the engine picture, it's an 8V. 16V models were ECOTEC, and had a much larger cylinder head.

Fuel system: Single Point Fuel Injection.
Fuel type: Petrol
Induction: Naturally aspirated.
Cylinder head: Light alloy.
Cylinder block: Cast iron.

TRANSMISSION

5 speed manual.
Drive: FWD.

PERFORMANCE

Power: 73 bhp.
Torque: 128 Nm (94 lb-ft).
0-60 mph: 14 secs.
Maximum speed: 102 mph (165 km/h).

RUNNING COSTS

37 mpg.
Euro Emission Standard: Euro II.

Notes: Small estate car from Opel / Vauxhall. Very cheap to run and maintain. 8V engine sits in a roomy engine bay, with lots of working room. Very few operations will ever require engine removal as a result. Estate body makes it an extremely versatile vehicle, especially with the rear seats folded flat. 1,6L engine not powerful, but will outlive many in its class.

This SIENA u too much, since i started planning for my first car, your "articles" have swayed, my previous options. .  . so with your permission - can i oliver twist ?
I intend going for a Merc - a C class particularly (1997 - 2002 model - I believe my budget can handle this range) so my question is what exactly does it mean when one says 1.6L engine or 2.2L. .  . and whats your take on the C class.
I also read your post on the AGO vs PMS thing. . . i am seriously tempted to go for a diesel option but. . . meeeeeen but  undecided
