Hi
I have been doing my research on businesses to bring me a sort of return of investment and farming seems to be one of them. I have read some of the old posts here but I think they are out-dated because prices in Nigeria change over the years. This will become the 2021 (latest version) for aspiring farmers out there and the current ones, hope you're living the good life they say all farmers do.
To cut to the chase, I have a #500,00 that I would like to invest in farming. This capital is exclusive of the cost for land.
I have been offered 230k/acre of land. From my research, I have seen that to be big and have a good ROI in farming, it is advisable to start with 10/20 acres of land. Now this is where my first questions come in - Do I rent or buy the land ? If I choose to buy/rent - Is 10/20 acres advisable ?
Reason why I am more towards buying is because the price of the land would increase. Even if the farm is a flop(I pray not), the land itself would have its own ROI.
The land I hope to acquire is in Kwara. Not too far from the city so over the years, development would reach the area and the land would cost more.
I now want to ask the current farmers who have struggled to become successful at it, what were your early struggles when you kicked off as farmers? What is your advise to young farmers? I took time off school to work as an intern and saved up some amount of money. I am young and I would want to have something to really boost my source of income as I aspire to be one of the greats in Nigeria.
What is the average cost of farming and the potential return of investments. I am looking at farming Cassava, Maize, Plantain Cashew
Also, I know about the herdsmen crisis going on so farming has to be done carefully and safely. My question is - What did the current farmers do as preventive measures ?
Is a fence over your land the best and only protective measure?
About fencing, what type of fence do you have around your farm? and how much does it cost to fence considering its wire-fencing ?
Thanks for your time and responses in advance

I had to do a password recovery to reply your post; I've been navigating the Forum anonymously for years.

In response to your post.
You're in the right direction. Agric still remains the best, if the needful is done.

First I might not be able to answer most of the farming related questions, but I have a few questions for you regarding the land you intend to purchase.

Where in Kwara is the said land?
What's the nature of the land, and how genuine is your seller?
Apart from the fencing, What is your plan on securing the land "officially" (getting title)?
I'm asking these because, I've learnt a lesson or two in this area?
Ilorin is where mine is located.
