The Department of Computer Science/Informatics, Faculty of Physical Sciences, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has opened a hardware/software laboratory.

The laboratory which was opened today by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sunday Elom, is geared towards providing ICT hands-on support to staff and students of the department in particular and the University at large.

While taking the Vice-Chancellor round the laboratory, the immediate past Head, Department of Computer Science/Informatics and currently the Acting Director, ICT, Dr. Uzoma Rita Alo, noted that in April 2021, the department secured full accreditation after the re-accreditation exercise by the National Universities Commission (NUC).



She explained that the hardware/software framework setup for the department was dismantled after the accreditation exercise and equipment ended up in cartons and shelves due to non-availability of physical structure and framework, adding that the department was left with no hardware or dedicated software laboratory which are critical components in assessing the quality of students on graduation.

In view of the forgoing, she further noted that the department had to establish a hardware/software laboratory dedicated solely to the Computer Science discipline, outside the University’s general/shared laboratory, in order to equip students with the functional knowledge and sellable skills to be productive in the discipline.



Continuing, Dr. Alo said the department requested the Vice-Chancellor’s approval to purchase 3 units of 2-horse power Air Conditioners; 70 pieces of Core i5 desktop computers (branded); 120 computer stools for hardware and software laboratory; Networking/Electrical Connections; 2 projectors and projector screens; 2 Micro-trainer kits (Recommendation of NUC Accreditation team), and 2 Logical Development system (Recommendation of NUC Accreditation team), in order to establish the laboratory.

The Vice-Chancellor while speaking at the event vowed that his administration will not only support but also provide all the necessary facilities needed for the repositioning of the Department of Computer Science/Informatics and all other departments in the University to enable them fulfill their mandates, especially in turning out globally-competitive graduates.



He further thanked the Department of Computer Science/Informatics for the level of work going on in the laboratory, promising to provide the needed support. On that note, the Vice-Chancellor directed that 5 additional new desktop computers be given to the department.
