We live in a society that prioritises men in many ways over women. Growing up, men are taught to prepare to be breadwinners of their homes and thus, treat money more cautiously than women. In the end, many women do not acquire financial skills, denying them financial independence.

In the Smart Money Woman, we see this trail in Tami and Ladun. Tami, who ‘comes from money’ is accustomed to relying on men to pay for necessities and luxuries. She depends on them to pay for her trips and to get big and expensive gifts for her. We get a clearer picture of this when Tami mocks Zuri for carrying the burden of paying her rent herself when she can easily get a rich boyfriend to cover that expense. On the other hand, Ladun, who married into money left her career to be a stay-at-home wife. She had no personal source of income and relied on her husband to provide for her. Unfortunately, her husband having lost his father to old age is unable to continue fueling her lifestyle in the way she had become accustomed to.

Nonetheless, the book makes no attempt to downplay the worth or role of a housewife. However, it hints that women should always have something to fall back on as life can be unpredictable. Women in such situations can look to passive ways of earning money that can accompany being a housewife such as investing in dividend stocks, earning money as a Youtuber, an affiliate marketer, online course teacher or even take on flexible jobs like consulting. The options are in-exhaustible.
